My OH and I are having one of those random debates only stubborn couples can get into...

Speaking completely hypothetically, I said that if we were to buy a horse somewhere in Europe (e.g. Denmark, where he's from), we would transport it by lorry and ferry / Eurostar. I believe that most racehorses travelling to nearby countries such as Ireland and France would be transported overland.

He reckons that these days racehorses for big group 1 races travel by plane (even if just from Ireland to UK), often on the morning of the race.

Any racing bods out there who can help us settle this..?

Californian Zinfandel - in true Sideways style - for anyone who gets this far

absolutly by plane!! imagine how long it takes goldolphin to ship his horses between newmarket and dubai!!! Be a bit 2 long by boat!!

Btw me and my oh had a debate over what makes prawn cocktail... mayo or salad cream lol

Eurostar - this the train? You can't take livestock on the Channel Tunnel.
You really need someone who knows! I think most Irish horses come by ferry as they just put the box on the ferry.

Lots travel by wagon from Ireland and think of all the people competing in Europe, they all take their lorries! Of course there are exceptions to every rule and some will fly the morning of the race so you're both half and half right!

Can I have tea instead please?!

Erm, obviously a flight from Dubai!!!!

The debate is about short journeys, e.g. Ireland to UK...

oops sorry, i would asume they would fly them short distance as well, due to time etc for training, flights are prob cheaper too!

Lol, I'm sure we're both right dependent on circumstances!

Still, if he ever buys the Knabstrupper youngster he dreams of, I'm sure we'll have it brought it over in a lorry

And I think personally its the MAYO that makes a prawn cocktail!!! LOL!

by ferrys from ireland to england and europe at least for the showjumpers i know....air to us australia, usa etc...there are a lot of risks involved in flying horses in planes i cant imagine top racers being flown on a short journey given that if they dont respond to a sedative on a plane they get put to sleep rather than risk them kicking the sides of the plane and bringing it down....plus ther are higher risks of infection due to the recycled air used on planes...
