Ok so I need some advice/opinions!

I am hoping to show my boy soon however I have NO idea what classes we could do! I am growing his mane out so he won't be able to be plaited up for Hunter classes etc! He just scrapes 15hh high and has just turned 6 years old however I don't want to do green horse/pony as soon he will be too old for it.
So here are some pictures of him, what classes would you recommend?

Breeding?

If he is a breed or 'type' and you want to show him, you will need to show to the relevant standards. For instance, Arabs are shown with long manes, but a part bred arab is shown pulled and plaited.

You are limiting your choice of class by showing him 'au-naturel' if his breeding/type dictates he should be plaited.

As for 'green' classes, do you mean novice classes? Most classes don't have an upper age limit, especially at local level. Mine is 6 and will be doing novice classes in Aug/Sept and if I can't do them this year, then he will be 7 and doing them. They are for horses that are new to showing, not just youngsters!

And I am sure I have seen your horse before - is he a stallion?

I can only suggest that you pull and plait to show in hunters, he's very striking :)

I agree (although judges may not like his colouring!).

Why do you want to grow his mane out? He's a lovely workmanlike sports horse sort, and I'm not sure at all that he will suit a long mane.

He's a bit small for show hunter. He could do riding horse or ladies hack, but would need to be plaited.

Also curious why growing it out. I would do riding type or hack classes. Could maybe do coloured depending on show schedule. Too fine for a hunter i would think but if he jumps would do workers.
I wouldn't grow mane out i would keep it pulled and plait it

Is he a Cremello? You could show in coloured classes, he is an unusual colour. Riding Club Horse, Equitation, Handy Horse (if they still do these and you don't mind a little jumping), Turnout classes.

Good luck!

He's lovely and if you don't grow his mane, then definitely hunter classes, try riding horse, riding club horse.

If you really want to grow the mane then you are restricting yourself to coloured classes :( Or abandon showing and do dressage instead :D

Is he cremello?

He might be eligible for coloured classes.

Failing that best turn out / Small hunter / RC?

He's certainly striking :)

Even in coloured classes horses should be shown to type, so as he's not a pure m&m (I don't think) you could be penalised even there.

That only leaves 'handsome gelding' 'best mane and tail' or 'horse judge would most like to take home' classes, or tack and turnout/best conditioned.

Why are you determined to grow his mane out? I think he could make a reasonable WHP if pulled and plaited :)

I also vote Pull, Plait, and show as a SHP/WHP. Why are you growing his mane out, just out of interest?

Haha so many replies, thank you all so much!!

Ok, he is actually a complete Heinz 57! A Connemara x Cob, he has a lovely huge knee action so I don't know if that would help/hinder anything? I have pictures of his trot showing the knee action if that's any help? :D

He is actually a Perlino, it's similar to Cremello so I don't know how he would fare in a coloured class, or even if he'd get in! I suppose some judges might love him and some might hate him

As for the mane, well I don't know what to do with it! It's always been pulled but I was considering growing it out or hogging it, I didn't know which would look best so I was going to grow it out first and see what I thought. That way if I didn't like it I could easily rectify it! :D So would you all vote to pull and plait instead?

As for 'green' classes, do you mean novice classes? Most classes don't have an upper age limit, especially at local level. No, I meant the classes for horses which are 7 and under (I think?), it's just for young horses of any type! Haha maybe, although he isn't a stallion sadly or else I would have lots of pale babies running around :D

I think I've answered everything! :D

Pull 'n' plait. Opens up a whole host of classes he could do. Yes, some judges may be biased against his colour, but his conformation looks pretty good (especially for local level) and his colour will certainly make a judge look twice.

He's not cobby enough to look good with hogged IMO.

Go have some fun. If you find youselves 'rejected', think again about what else you might do, then you'll be less restricted with the mane growing etc. decision.

Keep us updated :)

He's very lovely, my friends got a perlino too :)
I would also pull and plait, it'll give you a wider choice of classes, and even in a coloured class, or something like tack and turnout, they should be shown to type.
You could also try Part bred M&M?
You could always go along and watch a show or two first and see what he resembles most.
I think he's lovely, looks well put together too :)

You can't show him; he's too lovely and it wouldn't be fair on the other entrants!:D Seriously, hope whatever classes you enter go well! Beautiful horse!

Equitation classes. Handy Horse classes.

This - and Riding Club Horse, that sort of thing. He's a very striking colour but he really isn't a particular show horse type, (the first photo I'm afraid doesn't do him any favours though I'm sure he's lovely in the flesh!) and although closer to a hunter than anything else mentionned here, certainly I wouldn't bother putting him in a RH or Hack class, not meant disrespectfully to him as I'm sure he's very well schooled etc but he is certainly neither! At local/unaffiliated there are a wide range of classes you can do without being any particular "type". I hope you have lots of fun with him, he will certainly turn heads and be a talking point! :)

Haha aww thanks!! Sadly he is just very awkward as there aren't many classes for him to show in! I've always competed Dressage however after years of doing it I fancy a change which is why I thought that we'd give showing a go :D
