I'm sorry that this should probably be in veterinary but you guys are sooo helpful!! Picked up new boy on Saturday, 5 year old 17hh Liver Chestnut Trakehner (sp), as he was a little excited i turned him out straight away. Everything great! Sunday turned out covered in fly spray much to his disgust and was grazing happily, went into field 2 hours later and his sheath was covered in fly bites and bleeding, I gently washed the area off and plasterd in Sudo cream which has seemed to calm things down but since then the sheath is slightly swollen and the bit on his tummy in front of his sheath is very swollen. He is happy for me to touch it and plaster cream on (typical man!!) but I wonder if there is anything else I can put on or is sudo cream is safe. I have the vet coming for injections this week and will get him t look at it, but if he is prone to this now I guess I will have to find a preventative as cannot keep the flies away. Any advice please .......................... thanks for getting this far!

We have the same problems and find sudocrem is brilliant. Once the swelling goes down (around 48 hours) we use Baby oil gel to prevent reoccurance. Get the vet to double check he hasnt got an infection.

As a preventative we use Global Herbs Flyfree, it's bright yellow and stinks but works

To calm the bites down you could also try aloe vera gel, hope he's better soon.
