I have had my new pony for about a month now and in the last week he has started to really try it on with me! He has started playing up when being led from his field, trying to nip, stamping feet trying to rush off. Also when I went out with him the first time he was great, the second time he saw some horses in a field and started snorting and trying to buck me off and generally being a litle S**t!! . Someone on the yard said I need a Dually headcollar to teach him some manners when leading him - they seem very expensive but if it works...? What should I do when out riding him just push him on? I don't want this behaviour to get out of hand, and just wondered the best way of dealing with it - any help gratefully received!

I can't advise on the ridden work, but my 5yr old cob went through a similar phase in his handling, and a Dually worked wonders. He would pull of the lead rope, rear when being led, and generally be very unpredictable and a pita!

A year on he has the manners of a saint, but that could also be that he is more settled coupled with growing up.

Re the ridden issues I would be getting help from an experienced instructor.

Really don't like duallys, they are quite limited and I just don't rate them at all. You could try leading him in a bridle and see if that helps before you buy any new gadgets (that might not be effective).

Personally, I use a head collar and chain and if needs be a bridle and chain.

Out riding, yes I'd push him on and ride him through any tantrums he has.

Good luck!
