help! Not sure what to put my daughter on...!!!!

I've just went to go and colect my new SJ'er today - veryyy happy

Now im searching for a new SJ'er for my daughter, as sadly we've retired her old boy due to have a injury

- he's done her well!
He was 15.3hh very strong though responsive, and built petite.

She's competed on a 16.2hh TB mare before, whom she rode very well & is also regularly riding a 148cm pony for a livery, which she does'nt look to bad on - though rides very well.

Also ride's a 16hh eventer to keep fit for a livery, though she looks far bigger on him than our 15.3hh ..

She's about 5'8, 13years old and weights just about 9stone...

Need opinions on what size/breed to get really. Because I dont want to have to sell what we buy in a year and half because she's grown to much, though i dont want to get something she's going to look like a rag doll on! She's a very capable rider - but im sure other mummy's are seeing my point?!

Advice please!!!!

About 16.1hh I would say...but sensible....as you say you don't want her to grow out of it within a few months!! And if the horse is sensible it will give you peace of mind

My first horse was 15.1 and I was nearly 13 when got her... 3 yrs later I was 5'11" and looked a little daft on her!

Are you all tall in your family? I'd be tempted to look at 16 hands, maybe little bigger - that way she can grow into it or if she stay at 5'8" she'll still be ok on it
 
Well as an 18 year old, 5'8 who weighs about 11 stone I can safely say anything... My current pony is 14.1 and a little bit but a chunky monkey.

If you are worried about growth something about 16.1? Honestly, height isn't everything and I personally believe that all equines are born with the same ammount of panache... the tall ones have to spread it further!

You dont NEED a tall horse, but I can see why people want them.
Wouldn't it be a better idea to let her choose something that jumps well and she gets along with that is any height rather than a 16.3 horse simply because it is "the right height", she might be more inclined to sell that simply because it isn't "perfect" for her?
 
she wont reach anymore than just a tad over 5'8 hopefully, as her older sister's just turned 21 and she's only 5'9!

I was thinking around the 16hh height iswell...

About 16.1 hh ish. Make sure its a horse suitable for a teenager. My friend made a massive mistake for her 13 year old last year. Bought a 16hh warmblood to event - a professional had ridden and produced her and she got a good tune out of her. The mare is lovely, but not a teenagers horse as she is very sensitive and wilful and very, very mareish. Its a sad story, but said child is persevering with it, even though she has told mummy to sell it and get a better one (which goes round automatically, does dressage without any work, goes clear every time........ get my drift).
 
when i was 12 i got a 15.3hh and i was 5.2ft! so i would go for about 16.1hh, she is very tall for her age :O i feel mega short now! I have had him for 3 years now and i now look normal on him, hes such a compact little horse but even my dad whos 5.11ft doesn't look big on him, hes a proper teenagers horse as hes fast and fun, great at jumping but not overly serious, like i can have fun on him its not always work work work

I just didnt want to look through the height ranges of 14.2hh - 15.2hh on horsemart ect for hours on end when she'll grow out.
Just saves time looking at a certain height then looking for what she likes in a horse.

Well I would say abouty 16hh but don't be afraid to try a slightly chunkier, but smaller horse. She quite clearly is a competent rider so size doesnt seem to matter too much, but I wouldnt go below a 15.2. In my opinion, it is better to give an inch or two either way and get the right horse for you. My cob is nearly a hand bigger than I would like but I adore him and he had such a nice nature that I thought it was well worth the compromise and I was right

) I would just go and see as many horses as you can, in as short a time space as possible so she can really get a feel of the difference in sizes and rides. Good luck with your search.
 
When I was 16 my parents bought me Sammy who was 16.1 but a very fine TB so didn't take up much leg. I'm only 5ft 4 but wanted something I definitely wouldn't grow out of in height or ability. He was perfect.
I'd look for around 16.1 for your daughter but it does depend how broad she likes them. I've always preferred TBs so now have a 16.3 but new youngster is set to be chunkier so I'm hoping will only make 16.1 otherwise I'll look silly!

I know someone just like this - tried out a PSG dresssage horse, sat on it and said 'No Mummy he doesn't do the moves' maybe they think if you lift the horses lip and punch in the test you want then the horse will do it for her!!
