i have just bought a new horse and he is a perfect little gent he is 3/4 appaloosa and 1/4 tb but his third eye lids on both eyes are visable. not quite covering any eye. do they grow? retract? is it something i should worry about? my vet says its nothing to worry about but she is new straight out of uni and i am just paranoid incase it is something to be worry about. it doesnt seem to affect him apart from some times his eyes water can some one please help with an opinion or advice thanks x

bump bump,

because my filly's are like this too and I'm curious. Not concerned but definitely interested as she's just had an eye infection and they seem bigger but it's probably just my paranoia.

My mare has a lump on her 3rd eyelid and the vet has said he can operate but it could make the droppy eye lid worse. Thinking of getting it done though even though it doesn't bother her as they look very pink and not so pretty bless her. Plus they water so much. I have noticed that when she has her fly mask on in the summer the eyes appear much better or if she is in her stable out of the sun. But not too sure.

flash-28 does she/he get green sort of eye gu/weepy stuff coming out of it? you no like eye bogies? and is the only way to treat it by removing it? ooouuuccchhh vet bills

It's quite normal for the third eyelid to be clearly visible and as long as it looks healthy, with no signs of swelling or abnormal discharge, should be nothing to worry about.

She does tend to get quite a lot of discharge from her eye but the discharge is no different to the other horses. It is just eye bogies but quite a lot of eye bogie. Her 3rd eyelid being quite visible as a result of the lump on it and due to her age. She is 20 turning 21. Aside from looking not the best I have noticed much more discharge from her eye and the tissue looks a bit sore now. It seems to be a very bright pink, although my vet did say last time that the eyelid was ok. The operation that she would have would be one that she could have done at my yard without having to be knocked out. By putting the fly mask on (she has one to prevent UV rays coming through) it does help a lot as does just being in her stable.

Have you ruled out that this may be an appaloosa characteristic - the white sclera around the eye is more prominent on an appaloosa? Before I bought my stallion I went to look at a two year old appy colt who had rather a lot of white around the eye and made him look mean and piggy - I just couldn't make my mind up because of this. Lucky for me I didn't because then I found my dream horse (then 5 months old and an appy). No problems with his eyes - see pics on my profile - at the moment his yearling son and his quarter horse companion both have weepy eyes. There has been a change in the weather to wet and windy, though the stallion (on the same land but different paddock) is unaffected.
Check out BAPS (www.appaloosa.org.uk) or ApHC UK websites (www.aphcuk.org) both (I think) have pictures of the appaloosa characteristics with close up illustrations of the eye sclera.

suenroux- its not the white of her eyes although she does have devils eyes too .http://www.blindhorses.org/images/large/image006.jpg
