How often can you safely trim nails that are MASSIVELY overgrown.
:(

When I say massively, I mean curling round into the pad.

I have never needed to trim Ozzie's as he keeps his short, but do have a 10year old set of clippers (brought them when Oz was a pup, to get him used to having his nails done - used to take the tip off 1 nail each week).

My nail clippers are like these - Are there better options or shall I get another set similar to these as they are so old the blades are rusty, although they seemed to cut fine.

Now today I have managed to make the bitch more comfortable in that her nails are now clear of her pads (was a real struggle to get the clippers in to trim as so tight for room with nail curled round into pads, so couldn't use the safety bar ). How long before I can trim again? Don't want to risk hitting the quick.

If once a week isn't too often, I could arrange to do them once a week till I get them back in order (owner too incapable to do himself). Also I'm guessing I'm aiming for the tip of the nail to be just touching the floor when the dog is standing/weight baring on the foot - Is that about right? Can't see how the nails could even wear down themselves currently and no way would the poor bitch be comfortable walking on a hard surface as they were. Think there is still approx 1cm to remove off the worst ones (will get pics next time). Took approx 3mm off each today, but was too scared to do more - last thing I need is the bitch to catch a quick and put the bitch off allowing me to help her.

If you can I would use a dremel and do it every day.

Dremel? As in power tool?? Not sure I'm brave enough for that, or if the bitch will tolerate it, she isn't that confident and isn't mine.

Can certainly do more than once a week, but does that give long enough for the quick to die back? No idea how close to the quick I am, some nails are black nd the others are sooo thick I can't see the quick.

Dremels are ESPECIALLY good for dogs with black nails where you can't see the quick.

It's a case of slowly slowly catch the monkey.....you do NOT want to quick the dog; you want to stop BEFORE that and with a dremel it is much easier than with the type of guillotine clippers you have pictured.....honest! :)

There's plenty of vids on youtube of how to accustom your dog to a dremel....only EVER use the sandpaper attachments and not the stone ones. Also, a cordless, battery rechargeable dremel is the best and gives greatest manoeverability.

A friend of mine with dobes introduced it to me years ago; dobes seem to have claws that curl around very easily, as well as being black. Just google dobes, dremel and claws!

OMG was thinking cutter disc, didn't know there were sander heads!

Off to find some links/vids, then rack my brains as to who I know that will have one, if not the owner can put his hand in his pocket (he allowed her nails to get in this state after all).

If you dont fancy a dremmel then try a large file a "flat B*****d" yes that is what it is called the hardware store will know. I use one and find you can file quite quickly but acuratly. It is easy to trim off small amounts from sides etc to give a nice shape and no sharp edges. It works on all sizes of nails from Cavaliers to Flatcoats.

I could post her up, then you could rehome her once her nails are done (not mine so I won't miss her) - deal?
