My OH has just brought our little Patterdale back from a walk and I noticed some tiny red marks on the carpet, so he's had a look and the blood is coming out the end of his claw, similar to if a vet had clipped his claws too short.
His claws aren't that short though.

OH has somehow put a baby sock on his foot with a little bit of tape holding it on so that the blood doesn't go everywhere.

Have we done the right thing?

My spriger did that i bathed it and purple sprayed it and used a dresseing and vetrap as he cant get it off. Then I'd check it again tonight. If it doesn't stop bleeding later it may need to be checked out

Thanks
I wish I could do it, but at the moment I can't. My OH has to do everything as I've had an op.
I will get him to check it shortly and see how it looks, if not he'll have to take him to the vets, which is a nightmare in itself

Providing it's clean it should stop bleeding soon so I personally wouldn't be taking to the vets. If it's not clean, dunk it in some warm saline then when dry, as someone else said, a vetwrap over it for a while should help.

Thanks, it should be clean as I told OH to make sure he cleaned it... argh, this is why I like to do things myself because then I know it's been done properly!!

I would just keep an eye on it and make sure it stops bleeding. My lurcher pulled out his dew claw on a walk once

I know it sounds nuts but dip the afflicted claw in flour

It acts as a clotting agent and helps stop the bleeding :3
We did that when we had to clip puppies claws (3 weeks old ish) and they don't sit still, my mum caught one of them and I just dipped it in flour and waited a while and the bleeding stopped

Cigarette ash works too.. but I prefer flour.

As above...I always use flour to clog a bleeding nail...they always look like they are going to bleed for ever....but it does stop...a cottn wool compression or flour is best or make shift dressing to compress for a while.
