generally mares will come into a 'foaling heat' within a week of foaling, in which she can be put back in foal if desired, however it is best to wait until their next season after that as it will give her time to recover physically from the ordeal of the birth, etc.

Ditto advice as eventriders .... my mare is due to foal within the next week, and we wanted (if all goes well) to put her back in foal this year. Some people put mares to the stallion at the first "foal" heat, but 2 vets have told me that this is a really important "cleansing" season, and that you stand a much better chance of success if you wait until the second season after foaling.

Eventrider's answer is the best advice. A lot of mares are 'foal-proud' on their first season, and can prove difficult, so the second one is usually the best. If you leave it any longer the due date gets later and later in the year. Unless you are breeding race-horses, who's official birthday is 1st Jan, and therefore foaling in Feb/Mar. the ideal time is May/June when the weather is warmer and there should be plenty of grass.
