Hi, went out to check horses this morning and one of them has picked up what looks like a capped hock overnight, possibly from a kick as there is a small nick underneath & to side of the point of hock. The swelling is very soft and fluid, she's not sore on it.
While I wait for vet to come this evening (he's due to give vaccinations anyway), am I right is saying cold hosing and DMSO would be the best treatment between now and then?

Thanks Soulful,
Update on the capped hock.....
Vet saw her this morning instead of last night, by which time I thought the swelling was gone down quite a bit (25-30%) since yesterday.
He advised that there was no need to x-ray and no need to poultice as the cut was not infected and the joint itself was not affected, just the point of hock.
She got cortisone injection, penicillin to be conitnued for four days & 2 x bute per day for 3 days. Cold hose morning and evening for 10 minutes. Leave her in paddock as walking about will be better than box rest.
He said there was no need to worry about hock being capped permanently at this stage & I've to go back in a week if I'm not happy with the progress.
Very relieved that the vet is sure it will go down!
