Okay, bit of background -normal farrier away on an extended holiday so booked another farrier that looks after a couple of others horses on the yard. Good references.

He shod both of mine and my gelding is fine. But my mare is lame - at the front. When I arrived at the yard about 2 hours after him leaving to exercise her she was not able to put her hoof down and obviously not sound. Called him and he came out and took off the shoe -no sign of anything but hoof was a bit warm. Have put on a hot poultice for the last 2/3 days but nothing.

He returned today and put her shoe back on - different nail holes, checked the hoof all over and nothing to be seen. She was sound at walk and able to put weight on but lame at trot. Went back this afternoon to check and the hoof wall is very warm, much warmer than before. Didnt bother to trot her up as didnt think much would have changed.

I am guessing that he put the shoe on a bit tight the other day and she is bruised - but am i missing something? What else could it be?

Please help if you can as I am very worried.

Thanks...xx

It sounds like a nail bind. You need to get the farrier back out ASAP and remove the shoe. It may have cause an abcess in the foot. Get him to check with hoof testers. If it is, it will need to be dug out and then poulticed.

But I have already poulticed for 3 days and nothing showing - he has checked all the nails holes and nothing. He has used callipers to check for an abcess and again nothing. The shoe went back on today - are you saying to get it taken off again?

Coz of the above I am still thinking bruising but do you think I am wrong.....

I had a very similar thing happen to my boy recently. He lost a shoe and I had to get a different farrier out to put it back as I was told my farrier was away. (He wasn't but thats a whole different story) Being a typical sensitive tb my lad was lame without his shoe on but unusually he was still lame when the shoe went back on and his foot and fetlock area was quite hot. When I eventually got my usual farrier out he took the shoe back off and made a few adjustments to the fit. The stand in farrier hadn't flattened the shoe out after it had been pulled off and he'd also put a nail in a bit high, George was sound in walk almost immediately after but it did take a few days for him to be fully sound again in trot and his foot was hot for several days. My farrier said it was most likely down to bruising as his soles were very soft from all the wet ground. I did keep him in and I would probably recommend you do the same just in case. I'd also recommend you give the farrier another call and run the situation by him. My lad did come good after a couple of days but I would have been ready to call the vet if it had gone on for much longer.

definitely sounds like nail bind- i would get the shoe off again and if you can, wait for your normal farrier to get back off holidays and get him to put it back on.

poultice and hoof boot until he gets back.

Thanks for the response. Yep I have kept her in although I did horsewalk her today for a short while as she was going a little mad....enjoys being out more than in.

I am hoping that its bruising and nothing else......just so worrying. I will cold hose again tomorrow and try and get the heat down.

Take care.

My normal farrier is away for about 4 weeks - extended holiday - I dont really want to wait for that long.

What can I do with nail bind? Should I get my vet out to check?
