my elderly beagle is pushing 12; and both his colateral ligaments in his hind legs have gone. He can walk, and is on painkillers with these - very happy, and loves to chase my neighbours chickens. (she is ok with this, as he is too slow to ever catch one, and can't go up steps very well!)
But he does wander around her yard (fine with this)
Today he came home, and was behaving erratically/frantic and yelping occasionly.
To me, he looked itchy and was desperate to get off his feet, collapsing and lying as much as he could.
Could still get up, and attentive for food
rolleyes
so figured it wasnt too bad.
Family wanted to call vet and get him out.
I thought that he had probably got into something that he shouldnt have had on the yard, such as fertiliser etc. and had burnt himself/made himself very itchy.
So plan of action was a) get whatever was on his feet off - so he had a hot (as much as he could bare) with hibiscrub in it.
He spent about 15mins in it, and me massaging around his toes.
then I rinsed his feet with more hotish water, and dryed him off.
He seemed happier in the water and wasnt so frantic.
so then I bandaged his feet with a gauze non stick pad and put vet wrap over it, so he couldnt lick it and irritate it.
He also had a piriton (safe for horses so guess safe for dogs?) and I gave him another of his painkillers to ease it.
Obs will keep eye on him, and bring him to vets if gets any worse.
However, do you think I did the right thing?
I figured that the vet would have done the same?
Still, what do you all think? what would you have done?
