Are there any side effects from Kaolin?

His poop isn't watery today, it's more like yoghurt, so you'd think I would be hoping that's a good sign eh? He's alert, happy and well in himself and isn't dehydrated.

He's been starved since Thursday 9pm (as per vets advice as he didn't start diarrhoea again until 5am Friday morning) and I'm currently boiling a chicken breast fillet to mince and split between two light meals of chicken/rice today.

However, I'm even more anxious because his poop was black. To me this would usually mean alot of blood in it, but could it be a side effect of the Kaolin? If he has that much blood in his faeces, you'd expect him to look ill or in pain and he is as happy, bouncy and waggy as always.

Can't get hold of the vet. It just goes to voicemail and it's the on-call vet's number on the surgery answer phone. I assume he's talking to another client or out of signal range.

Any chance he could have got at a cleansing Claire as that is the colour it sometimes goes when they do? Also I would have thought kaolin would have made it lighter not darker. As an example when we had terrier pups tattooed, the mum's poo turned to bright green, same colour as the tattoo because she was still clearing up after them!

As long as he's happy in himself I don't think there'll be much you can do about it, maybe feed him dry biscuit to give him more fibre.

Is there any chance he could have eaten dirt to settle his stomach? Dogs sometimes do this if they're unwell and it will make his stools very dark in colour.

Kaolin will cause black stools, including in humans when taking pepto bismol, so I wouldn't panic if it has only started to happen with the Kaolin.. Nothing but worry with animals!!
