I have been looking for a new saddle for ages. Particular type and width. Beau currently has a 17.5 inch saddle. I've been offered an 18 inch.
Beau is only 14.3 but she has a relatively long back taking a 6ft rug. How do I know if she will be ok in a slightly longer saddle? They don't look any different.

Sounds a bit long for your horse, you need to find the last rib, follow that up to the spine and the panel of the saddle when correctly fitted should not go past this. But that is only a part of it, you need to get a saddler or saddle fitter out really to fit your saddle properly if you can, Oz

Thanks i've not had much luck finding her last rib! I know I need a saddle fitter. I don't want to call one out to fit a saddle if I can just find that rib. If it's to long there's no point having saddler. :-)

Yes sometimes it can be hard to find that rib!
Do consider a saddler to fit your saddle, they can see things that sometimes other miss, hope you get it sorted, best of luck,Oz :)

My mare is 14.1, takes a 6ft rug, long backed, but she can only take a 17' saddle. Don't know many little ones that can take an 18' to be fair! I'd be dubious about it to be honest! Sorry x
