Went to check horse tonight to find him not his usual self at all. He called to me when I walked into field but didnt walk towards me like he usually would. To start with I thought he was standing a bit awkward and he still wouldnt move. I eventually managed to move him but the couple of treats I had with me which he knows I bring he didnt want at all. Checked his feet and they all felt the same, they're usually warmish but have always put that down to the huge amounts of feather he has! He seemed very subdued and quiet so I brought him onto yard. Walked up ok and had him trot a little too. Usually he'd tug on the way up to try and get the good long grass but not tonight. I tied him up and gave him some hay which he wasnt really interested in just nibbled at it :( didnt want carrots either. His stomach felt a bit hard and kind of stuck out a bit, he wasnt tucked up or anything like that though and it was gurgling away like normal. Hes chewing quite alot and keeps lowering his head. I've watched him for 2-3 hours and no difference in him, no poo's either. The field hes in doesnt have a huge amount of grass (which is good as hes quite fat) but it does have oak trees and some baby ragwort has started sprouting. Could the symptoms suggest he might of consumed some and have belly ache? Or could he have eaten too much (theres chestnut trees too) and have belly ache? Does it sound like lami?? I dont know what to think but at this time of night am in a right panic!! I've come home to charge phone and do some research so any help would be really really appreciated!

Should probably add I've left him in with a small amount of hay and plenty of water. He doesnt like being in on his own and as the other horses are out of view I'm also worrying about him fretting! I wanted to see if he'd poo'd by the time I got back.

If he's really not right and you know that something is just 'wrong' - then there is a problem, so I would get the Vet.

I had this with my cat recently. He just wasn't himself, so I ended up taking him to the Vets (late in the evening and on a bank holiday of course) and he had a temperature of 106 and was really poorly.

I certainly wouldn't risk leaving it overnight with animals as sensitive as horses are (it could be colic).

Always trust your instinct... Don't ever doubt it... If you are worried enough to come on here... Get the vet out.

Just ask yourself one question...

If my horse died tomorrow, and a vet call could have saved him/her... Would I have called the vet? Awful question I know, but really, what cost is a vets call for the price of piece of mind. Your horse is ill, I know this because you are on here worried. Even if its a very mild colic, or something your horse is off colour and you noticed it. Get the vet out. Always better to be safe. X

Just give your vet a call, they will ask you some questions and give you advice to make the horse comfortable and you can decide together if they need to come out or see how he is for a bit. It could just be a mild colic or a number of other things. Let us know how you get on!
