Anyway - I have a question on studs. This is the first time I've ever used them, and this morning cleaning them etc to plug in time for tomorrow, I noticed that her shoes behind are a TINY bit loose as in when I put the tap in, it kind of moved the shoe away from the foot. (She's due for shoes next Saturday)

I've seen people tighten studs up v tight but will they affect the shoe in this particular case?

Advice pls.

Cheers.

The length of thread on the stud is much shorter than on the tap used to clean out the hole so you shouldn't see the shoe lift when you screw the stud in. If it does them the shoes have probably worn too thin. In this case I would pop along to local halfords and get some small washers to put over the stud thread to reduce the amount is screws in but I doubt this will be necessary.

Using studs automatically loosen shoes anyway. If shes due to be shod next week shoes will obvioulsy be slightly looser than shoes that have just gone on.

When you apply the tap if you screw down too far the shoe does tend to move away from the hoof anyway, however, studs should be designed to be the same depth as the shoe itself (unless the shoe is worn considerably). So when the stud is applied and tightened it shouldnt dig into the hoof. However, if you have worn the shoe down then the stud will be slightly longer and in which case will cause the shoe to come away from the hoof more.
Theres no point applying a stud that isnt done up tight enough, you may as well not bother. So i would still tighten up the stud appropriately.
What are you doing this weekend?
It might be that you might not need them, unless its dressage on grass then i always feel safer with studs.
But last weekend at MKEC 3 of us didnt use studs and none of us slipped or slid into fences.

Always have WD40 to hand also

Best of luck hun.
