I have a cob whos mane has got very long and thick!! I want to make it a normal length and thickness, but don` t want to pull it and even the solo comb takes hours!!! Any ideas how to make a good job without it taking hours????

Short of paying a freelance groom to come out to professionally pull it for you, I don't think there is a "quick" way to shorten and thin a full mane and doing a good job LOL!

Pulling it is the only way - these rakes do a good enough job the first time you use them but once it all starts growing back again its even worse. Grit your teeth and start pulling! :)

I know people over here with horses that have long thick horrid manes that clip them out down the middle with hair on either side so it looks normal ? They all compete and once the mane is braided you would be none the wiser. Wouldn't even know if you were watching the horse being schooled unless it flicked over to expose the clipped out part.

I use a razor comb to shorten the mane and take the longer bits out from underneath the mane. It doesn't thin, but it does make it look a lot tidier.
Pulling is a big 'no-no' for me. Simply not allowed because it hurts, and herr neck bleeds. (white mane, pink skin).

Solo combs leave horrible spikey bits.

Mane rakes are good at thinning, but not good when plaiting is needed. If you don't intend to plait, then give it a go, but go careful. Less is more with these.
