I need to buy my 4 year old a new saddle. I have my heart set on an Albion K2 GP but finding he size I need is like gold dust. I have seen an Albion 5000 VSD GP for sale and wondered if anyone has any comments about this saddle. Would you also say a VSD is suitable for a 4 year old?

Quite simply don't buy a new saddle until the horse is around 6 years old, it will change shape so much what fits them now will possibly not fit them in a few months, you will be wasting your money.
Wait until they have finished growing and muscling up, get yourself a decent secondhand fitted professionally by a saddler or saddle fitter.
The saddles with adjustable trees may not be the answer either, they don't fit all types, your saddler would advise you on this, Oz

the saddle I have seen is second hand and he has been measured by master saddler. I just wasnt too sure about a VSD saddle as opposed to a GP.

Your horse won't care if he wear a showjumping saddle, a GP, a dressage or a VSD, which only means a GP that is more like a dressage saddle. So long as it fits, he will be happy. As previous people have said, don't buy new just yet. My new horse was a Medium and 2 months on, she is now Wide. Just get a nice, tidy second hand saddle and get a good saddler to re-flock it, so it fits properly. Treat yourself to a new saddle in a couple of years time.

I meant a cheaper English secondhand saddle, as long as it is sound, fits the horse, fits you and is flocked correctly it doesn't matter what make it is.
Chances are you'll be getting rid of it in a few months so wait until the horse is older.
THEN get yourself a nice Albion K2 !

I have a saddle that fitted my mare nicely at 4. Since then she has been a brood mare. She has just returned from rebacking and I am having trouble finding a saddle wide enough. So I currently have 4 saddles of which the horrible synthetic fits my other riding horse but doesn't fit me. The other 3 fit neither horse and will not fit the youngsters when they grow up. But they are nice saddles and will have a trade-in value. My suggestion is to buy a good second-hand saddle that will retain its trade-in value. Don't go for cheap second-hand as it will be worth peanuts when you get his next saddle and synthetics have no resale value at all.
