Does anyone have a horse on bute long-term for whatever reasons? Wondering the overal impact apart from pain relief, negative side effects please????

Ive not got one on Bute But, the negs include, If your horse hurts himself some place else, IE a Hoof abcess, He wont know and there fore Neither will you.

There is a very eldery pony at my yard that has bute everyday just to keep him sound and a bit more comfortable. It seems to work well and he has been taken off it for a week or so very occassionally and you can notice he is generally stiffer etc. He has been on it (daily) for the past 2 years and the effectiveness doesn't seem to reduce as some people say they can become 'immune' to it. Don't know of any neagative side effects in his case but each horse responds differently etc. I also don't know where bute stands as a 'illegal substance' in competitions etc

I had one on Butefor spavin many years ago, he developed photosensitisation due to the damage the bute did to his liver so we took him off it but I think the damage was already done.

I have my horse on Danilon long term, 1 satchet every other day. I swopped on to Danilon from bute as long term use of bute can cause stomach problems (ulcers, I believe?). There have (touch wood) been no negative impacts of this.

Your horse would have to be doped up to the eyeballs for this to be true! This is the argument against denerving operations for things like navicular, not bute!!

This is an interesting post for me. My 8 yr old is now on long term bute. He's on one a day and its the first time he's been sound for a year. My vet is unconcerned but my new farrier thinks I should find an alternative asap which I am reluctant to do at the moment as he is currently sound.

Is Danilon as effective as bute as I will probably want to experiment in a few months or so.

As I understand it, they offer equivalent pain relief. I am surprised your vet is unconcerned, and would ask to swop asap (to Danilon, not your vet

). 1 a day is quite a significant dose and your horse is only 8. You dont want to store up problems for the future if your horse is going to be on bute long term.

Not quite the same but similar -
A friend has an old ex racer, he's now 22. Since he was 15, he had been on bute every day for arthritis in his knee and was still able to be ridden well. He was also on Blue Chip Pro, oil and everything else you can stick down their throats and it was costing her a fortune but she didn't like to do anything as the old boy was still so active but she was worried about the effect the bute was having on his insides. I had a youngster on Synequin, he had damaged his hock which healed very well and I told her my vets were saying they had found more success with Synequin than any of the other joint supplements, would it be worth a try. She bought a tub and by a fortnight she was able to stop everything except the bute; at the end of the month, she stopped the bute just to try, expecting him to become lame in a day (have to add this was on her own vet's advice too!) and he didn't. He has now been on just Synequin for 3 years at very low dosage rates, has never been lame not even in damp conditions and still bombs off with her every chance he gets. She would not go back to bute again for him. Would it be worth a try seeing as yours is so young too? There's also Cosequin which is similar. Word of warning, it is much cheaper from an equine pharmacy than from your vets, I saved over £40 and it's a few years ago now!
Try this site, this should lead you to a supplement comparison chart.
