Basically, I have a 17.2 Trakenher X who up until 2 months ago was fantastic to ride and handle.
He is 14 and is turned out with my other 10yo mare. He had been out on loan last year and came back like a toast rack

so spent most of the summer on Allen and Page weight gain and chaff to get the weight back on which he has done nicely.
Within the last 2 months he has been a complete and utter tw*t and for what reason I cant fathom out

His whole attitude has changed, you get dragged, pushed, spooked with. It just not like him at all!

His food has been cut down to near enough nothing apart from hay in the field (still out 24hrs on good grazing) and a scoop of chaff so he doesnt bother my mare whilst she is being fed as she has her supplements.
He tanked off with me about 6 weeks ago in the jumping paddock for no reason and has been strong the last few times. He is in a loose ring snaffle with a flash and can still open his mouth. Everyone I spoke to said try him in a grackle.

I have tried him in a dutch gag and he just went up and dont think he will like anything with a curb on

Put him in a grackle today we physically could not get it any tighter and he could still open his mouth and cross his jaw and he was even stronger than before

He spooked at a lady behind a car earlier and dumped me out the side door rapidly.

When my mare is taken out of the field he throws an absolute hissy running up and down the fence screaming his head off like an idiot but if you bring him in to groom or whatever on his own. No problem. I have thought about seperating them into two paddocks but he will just charge the electric fencing.
I have bought some mollichop calmer as it has been recommended to try that and see what happend but Im at the end of my tether with him and am out of ideas.
Im having the vet out too check him and take some blood tests to see if its anything inside too. Back and teeth already done.
Anyone????

Sounds like he had a real HELL of a time out on loan and that it's going to take time and lots of love to bring him back to how he was before he went on loan. It's up to you but you could have over fed him on cereals trying to get the weight back on with out the exercise.

So, when he first came back (and over the summer), were you handling him much and/or exercising? If so, was he OK then?
Also when did you start exercising in relation to stopping the weight gain feed?
Just trying to make sure I have things in the right order! Thanks.

He is and was handled every day. He was been ridden 4 times a week whilst on the weight gain. He has got the weight back but his temperement has changed overnight. whilst he was out on loan he was being hacked 3-5 times a week "supposidly"
