Help please !

Hi guys, very sorry for the message without an intro, but i'm in a pickle !

I have recently bought a horse (sunday) he is a id X connemara, and is lovely, i love him to pieces, he is a joy to ride, and can be rode by anyone. But he has trust problems, he is only 6 and this is the first time he has moved house,and he is not trusting me at his quarters, every time i go to brush his quarters he lifts his back leg up- hes warning me he may kick. I speak to him constantantly, letting him no i am no threat to him and he is gradually getting to no me, but is still soooo bad round his quarters, i have not even tried to pick out his back hooves , any help and tips would be greatly appreciated please,

If you only got him on sunday I would say you are expecting a bit much to soon ! It can take along time for him to trust you and settle in I would just keep grooming him and make it part of your routine so he gets used to it and don't rush anything just work at grooming nearer and nearer his back end each day as much as you can see his is comfortable with and then remember to reward him if he is ok about it.

It doesn't always come over night I have had mine over a year and it's only in the last few months that I have been able to brush his tail while standing behind him.

My previous horse Rommy was terrible round his quarters, and never got out of the 'lifting a leg in warning' stage even though I had him for 2 1/2 years. He had pain related issues so whether it was that or just the fact that he was quite thin skinned. I knew he wouldn't kick me but still lifted the legs in a warning gesture. I guessed he must have been quite ticklish/uncomfortable with being groomed around his belly, flanks and thighs so I used to use a very soft brush on those areas. I tend to give my horses the benefit of the doubt so maybe I would get him checked over by a physio just to be on the safe side. He may be a little sore, and if he is an honest type of boy he wouldn't necessary show any problems through riding if whatever is wrong is in its early stages. Good luck x

Just make sure you're extra gentle, and give it time - you've only had the horse for a week and it took mine a lot longer than that to get out of his ear phobia.

So good luck, just spend some more time with him and I'm sure it'll be fine!
