hi, i have a 12.2 pony 3 and a half years old, he was sent off to be broken to drive, but came back crippled with lamminitis, i have had x-rays and they show his pedel bone has rotated right donw nearly touching his sole in one hoof and the tendons at the back of the bone have pulled away and shrunk, in the other hoof the pedel bone has droped a bit but is splintering on the point from some cause of infection. I have been advised that even if he has the op to cut his tendons he may be in tremendous pain for a very long time and may still have to be put to sleep.Could you give me your view as i have to make the decision very soon and am not sure what to do for the best. thank you. :(

Sorry to hear this but have you contacted the laminitis trust? They are experts and will be able to give you good professional advice. What do your vet and farrier say? No one on a forum can really make that decision for you, you know your horse and he will tell you when and if he has had enough.

Im so sorry to hear your news, Laminitis is horrid. Only you will know when the time is right, and that you have done all you can for him. My mare had bad laminitis, and in the end could hardly move, even with all the drugs she was on. I knew it was time to say my good byes. I could have taken her to the horse hospital (with very slim chances of rectifying), but I just could not put her through it, or the journey for that matter.
thinking of you x

Yes it is a hard decision, and even harder when they are so young like yours. I hope there is light at the end of the tunnel for you and your boy. Let us know how you get on!

Get hold of a copy of "Founder, prevention and cure" by Jaime Jackson as quickly as you can and read it from cover to cover. Don't whatever you do have him put down and then read it afterwards. If you have him put down don't EVER read it or you will never be able to stop wondering whether you had him put down unnecessarily.
