My yearling is ment to be going to get gelded tomorow but today he would not let us catch him to get his head collar on...We tried for nearly 4 hours, as soon as we go to put the strap over he bolts. we tried putting a rope round his neck but again he bolted, a friend who has years of experience came to help and tried various methods from joining up to penning but again no joy... he will stad to be groomed and have his feet picked but as soon as we attempt any catch method he bolts off. He seems to be playing catch me if you can as he stayed very relaxed but just wont let us catch him, I need advise as he is ment to be getting collected at 3pm tomorow and if i cant catch him, he will not get gelded for a while...

Tips please....

have you tried bribing him?
maybe give him taste of jam or something sweet to get him distracted while you go through the motions of grooming, and then try to get a headcollar over whilst hes lapping up the jam.

sorry cant help more but good luck.

Tried bribes, but as soon as we move he just runs around us, He is normally so easy to catch, halter and lead, he must sense somthing is going on....

Its probably something you are giving off, horses always know when you are in a rush.

would he do it for someone else? someone not beig influenced by any haste?

Hi there,
I have been breaking in a feral pony and had a problem at exactly the same point for ages! try getting the headcollar on by using one with a clip and pushing it over his ears rather than flipping the end over (as long as he is good about his ears). Also get a scoop of nuts! bribery works! Every time he puts his nose in the headcollar give him some nuts. then when you get one ear in - more nuts! then both ears - more nuts! get a lunge line on the headcollar. dont try to use a rope as it's way too easy for him to get away. The lunge line means even if he does you can grab the end more easily. Make sure you pull against him with him at 45 degress to you so not facing away or across you - that way he'll be less strong. Good luck!

Well I was up there from just after 0730 until 1430 with no joy, the lady came, got in with him and caught him straight away....4 days of trying and it took her around 4 seconds........

Don't feel bad, I walked into the field with 'Vet says you're going to hospital' tatooed on my forehead. Horse, who reads exceptionally well, said 'bugger off'.
Your yearling is reading well for his age.
