I’m thinking of taking my boyfriends mom’s horse to some shows next season, he is supposed to be a welsh section d according to his passport but we don’t think he’s full welsh. Last year however we did show him as a welsh but do you think he would be better plaited?

I would be doing best turned out inhand, senior novice rider, family pony, utility pony and possibly veteran

Looks like a Welshie to me. Who is he passported with, if hes not reg with the WPCS you probably shouldnt be in the Welsh classes anyway, unless its a little local show & then they tend not to worry. Hes a lovely chap though :)

He does look Welsh doesn't he... if you want to show him as a Welsh he needs to be registered with the breed society. To do this you'll have to prove he is Welsh, usually through DNA testing. Call the breed society and they will advise on how to go about this. I've managed with an unregistered Arab mare before, the DNA test cost about £60 and then after the DNA analysis revealved she was pure bred she was registered, easy peasy!

Re the other classes I'm no showing expert but was under the impression he should be plaited...perhaps someone willl be long to correct me!

BTW, in Welsh classes you can do one long plait in the bit of mane at the top of the neck (behind ear) to show off his neck.

Looks like he could be "mostly" welsh and if you enter him in the local shows under "Large Mountain and Moorland" I'm sure no-one would query it! Generally native breeds don't have their manes plaited.

As has been suggested, you could always have him tested and if he isn't full welsh, he would be eligible for registration as a Part-Bred Welsh.

Good luck with the showing!

PS - I would let his mane just in front of the withers grow back as it spoils the line of his neck and makes his withers look quite prominent. Just a suggestion, please don't take offence!

Yes I agree, and strictly speaking pure breds shouldn't have ANY trimming or plaiting.. not that many people seem to adhere to this any more, unless ponies are now producing manes that stop at 9 inches long with a level bottom (snort of derision, sorry, will get off soap box now!).

Looks welsh to me too. I'd look at the breed standard and google sec d's so you are to compare the turnout. The first thing I'd try is to grow the section in front of wither and lay the mane on the other 'correct side'
Love his colour though
And good luck in the shows

But M&M's should be registered with the relevant breed society as well & PB's arent eligible for M&M classes.
