I need some advice, I have a 15.3hh thoroughbred that i'm planning on breeding next year. Shes a very fine mare, and would like to breed her with something a bit heavier and bigger. Ideally I'd want the foal for hunting purposes with some xc.

Anyone got any tips or experience with breeding thoroughbreds, this would be my first foal so any help would be great :)

Thanks

Do you have any pictures? if you want a nice hunter you might consider putting her to an RID. I don't know of many but I know there are people on the board who could suggest one.

I don't think you can beat an Irish Draught or Irish Sport Horse in that case, almost purpose made for what you want.

So many to choose from including Bressingham National Silver (Spyder) belonging to Simsar on here; Avanti Amorous Archie belonging to Rita on here or a proven producer of Grade As and advanced eventers, Maurice Minor. (I've had two by him who are absolute stunner, the eldest very useful too) There'll be lots of suggestions for you but those three I do know and would have no hesitation in recommending or using myself (my 3/4TB is in foal to MM for next year)

Thank you for the reply's, I was thinking along the lines of an ID, I had an IDxTB that I had to have pts around a year ago and she was an absolute angel.

Palominomare, I don't have any full body shots but shes the chestnut in my picture.

Maesfen, are any of them in/close to Wales? Also have you any pictures of the two you've had by Maurice Minor.

Nice to know we sing from the same hymn sheet then!

These are the ones I have of Tara (this year's) with her dam, an ISH (by TB x Premier ID mare) must get onto Simsar to update me as she's grown loads (mare is down there for a few years) She's been weaned now but unless she's sold she will be staying there until spring, I expect her to make 16.2+

This was Bear. Came 3rd in his only start at BE80 on his dressage score and has since concentrated on working hunter classes (well!) and is in his 3rd season hunting with the North Staffs. Out of a Commanche Run mare that was only just over 15 hands, he now stands 18 hands himself.

Forgot to say, MM is at Embla Stud near Stafford, Spyder down in Surrey and Archie is Essex but does AI.

Maesfen, just fell a bit in love with Tara, and Bear is handsome, Shelly my previous IDxTB was 17.3 and was amazing... until she heard the hunt! I will have to check Maurice Minor out and he seems to produce some beauties.

Thank you ritajennings I will have to check her out, the closer the better as my two find it very hard to be separated.

Can't wait for next year now...

If you are happy with AI then the world is your oyster!! There are many ID stallions who do AI so you can keep your mare at home. Or have you considered a Cleveland Bay. Colin ad Margaret Green stand Penrhyn PS in Wales at the Tregoyd stud and he is a lovely stallion with some super stock on the ground. Or Kirkmoor Elderberry Flower owned by Heather Ketley does AI as does Lindon Principal owned by the University of Lincoln who has been extremley successful under saddle. PM me if you want any more info, photos, etc of any of these

I bred my 15.3 tb race bred mare to primitive star and got a very nice foal this year she in my albums (ivy) she also got a 8.82 higher first premium at futurity in the event horse section! Primitive star is half ID half TB but more like a large ID in person!

Thanks for the recommendation maesfen.
HollyJM please feel free to PM or email for any more info on Spyder. Also if you like Tara that much why don't you make Maesfen an offer you would have to go far to find a nicer foal. I will go and take some more pics in a bit and post them for you later! :)

Also cannot recommend Avanti Amorous Archie enough, great stallion and great owner contact Rita in the post above she is so helpfull! :)
