Hi All

I'm hoping some of you knowledgeable people will be able to help me.

Tragically I have just lost my 6.5 yr GSD to kidney failure bought on by auto immune issues. He was my 2nd GSD and I'm lost without him.

Both my boys were bred by people I know but they are no longer breeding so I'm at a loss where to start looking.

My preference is for the old fashioned straight backed, short haired type. I just don't like the look of the slopey back shepherds - nothing against them, just not my cup of tea.

Temperament is paramount.

If anyone knows of any GSD (pups or young dogs needing rehoming - not bitches) in the south lincs area please point me in the right direction.

Many thanks

So sorry to hear about your lad. To be honest all the breeders I would recommend breed the international type of shepherd, which may not be what you are looking for. Having said that people sometimes don't actually mean old fashioned, just not over exaggerated. What was the breeding of your lad (pm if you prefer) and I could perhaps point you in the direction of someone with similar lines.
Or you could have a look at http://www.germanshepherdrescue.co.uk/, sadly they always have plenty of dogs looking for homes.

Sorry for your loss x

Join the BIGGSD/GSD Vigil forum for rehoming prospects.

Pardon my appalling geography but the Foxfold and Absela kennels are sort of in that area but probably a bit too much coat for you.
Equiside have some nice stock, also try Chinsam.

I really don't know where everyone is seeing these slopey backed shepherds - a lot of them are just pulled into that position for pictures - if you look at pics of my young dog he is straight backed but I can make him look like a slopey showdog for a pic in seconds :p

Thank you both for the replies.

Part of the problem is that I don't know the breeding of my boy - he wasn't KC registered as bred by a family friend who only bred her own dogs and I never asked their heritage.

CaveCanem, thank you - I did google and found Absela, her dogs look absolutely gorgeous, but yes, too much coat. My boys have always spent most of their time outside charging around the yard and I found that long fluffy coats and this type of lifestyle means lots and lots of baths and grooming! The boy I have just lost was this type of coat, whereas his predecessor was the short haired variety.

Both my boys were around 42 kg when in their primes, not huge great dogs just solidly built, leg in each corner types.

I've looked on the rescue sites but I think my requirements mean that realistically a pup or young dog is going to be best. We have another dog already (working Clumber spaniel) and also have people coming a going quite a bit so any dog needs to be excellent with other dogs & have a calm, temperament. I have been spoilt by my previous dogs who were both wonderful loving boys, content to go with the flow.

Yeah, my fella is a fluff and it is a massive pain in the bum trying to remove all those twigs from his tail!!

I would actually consider 42kg a top weight - my big dog is 40kg and he is like a donkey :p

There is no harm in phoning a few kennels and seeing if they have had any young ones returned/haven't made the grade for show or work.
