Bear is suffering from what appears to be a skin allergy. The only new thing in his diet is bran for anal gland issues. I've stopped this and all cereal based treats. He's raw fed and I'll do an elimination diet if the skin doesn't clear up very soon. Meanwhile, can I give him a Piriton?

I have given dogs Piriton (rather than Piritonteze) before as advised by a vet. Didn't really seem to help - but have heard it works for some and not for others.

My dog is also suffering allergy issues - just on her feet. She is also raw fed. The vet however, told me that if you 'look at any dog long enough you will find something wrong with them' and as she is 'fit, healthy, with a perfect coat and weight' she didn't feel it was necessary to medicate or take further action. Admittedly the allergy is not bad and everyone thinks I'm fussing! (no hairloss, redness or scabbiness - just staining of fur between the toes where she has been licking).

Bear is the black and white springer in my sig, not a northern breed.

He has scabby areas on legs and chest. There's a hot spot on one leg and some of the scabs are sticky. He's licked one leg so much he doesn't want to put weight on it. Buster collar and another loratadine tonight. Poor lamb.

Are you sure its an allergy?

Just because you mentioned the hotspot......Hot spots are most often bacterial infections and are inclined to spread rapidly so you might need a vet to get some steroid cream and antibiotics for this one I'm afraid.

What have skin scrapings shown?

My vet has told me that I can dose a 36kg entire male with up to 4 piriton per day; I generally find that I start with one per day in April and build up to two per day and then wind down and knock them off about October for this particular dog.

He is also raw fed and issues only started at age 6.

Agree it may have spread into an infection.

I used to give 4x piriton a day but checked with vet first. Animeds or Petmeds or one of those companies sells pots of 500 for a tenner.

Sorry, CT, brain not working!

Hot spots can spread very quickly. I find the best thing for them is to bathe them in colloidal silver, pat dry and puff on athletes foot powder. It seems to sort them out in no time.

However a vet will be able to diagnose and advise properly.

I hope Bear feels better soon.

He's much better today, has had a loratadine one a day for three days now. My vet friend told me loratadine was ok to use. There is no scratching or discomfort today. Scabs are dry, skin less red. Poor lamb, I'm amazed at how swiftly the improvement has happened.

I also started him on evening primrose oil.

No skin scrapings taken yet as its very recent.

Have fuciderm if it gets worse but as this thins the skin, I'm a little wary, plus I want to reserve that for an actual emergency/really serious thing.
