im riding a pony for my friend, its been out of work for two years(maybe ridden a couple of times) its a little nervous by nature and today i sat on her and walked her round, she was fine, then i thaught as she seemed fine i would have a little trot. she spooked at some poles on the floor then bronked like mad-i fell off and hurt my blimmin shoulder again!! anyway-had teeth and back, saddle checked, all fine. im now worried about riding her again as im not sure how many falls my body will take

my friend has not owned the pony long but as far as she is aware, the pony used to hunt and have kids ride etc. she wants me to get pony back up to scratch as i have more experience in this. what would you advise as i realise im going to have to trot on her at some point!! how would you go about this? also i lunged her before i rode and she was absolutely fine!!!

I would do a lot of ground work first!!!!
DO some lunging and long reining for a few weeks, then try getting on again, also walk her in hand to get her used to you.

I'd advise getting her to sit on it! Not meaning to sound mean but why did she buy it if she couldn't get it going herself? Is she paying you to bring it back into work? Are you insured? It's all very well if you're being paid or if it's your own horse....

If you really want to do it I would do lots of groundwork and at least two weeks of solid walking before you try trotting again

Good luck!!

If it was me, I'd cheat an use an australian stock saddle - its impossible to get bucked off with one!

Failing that a giant baler twine "balance strap", aka grab handle so you can pull your weight down to stop it bucking you off.

Never good though, but don't be afraid of pulling its head up and booting it!
