I have posted this in vet forum too but thought I'd add it here for extra help please......

Rash on body - Suddenly arrived - Help !
Can anyone help please. Brought my pony in from field tonight and she is covered with hives all around her rear end and some on her sides and back. They don't appear to be bothering her particularly but one or two have scabs and the hair pulls off easily. The only thing that really bothers me is that there are two areas under her mane that look sore and that are open. The mane itself was a bit matted around where these sore bits are.

I tried to get a pic of one of the sores but couldn't manage it unfortunately, however the scab was "crusty" and yellowish in colour.

My pony is 13 and has never had sweet itch before, I have however had her on Danilon for a sore back and Lexvet mineral mix for about 4 days, do you think it could be some sort of reaction to one of these as nothing else has changed in her diet .

Any advice would be gratefully received.

I can add photos if someone tells me how to please.
Thanks

That's exactly what happened to my horse when I changed his diet I had vet oout he had steroid jab. But to be honest it still came up again after for a few days and went on its own. I'd take her straight off what you've been giving her and then once cleared up introduce new feeds one at a time so u can see of there's a reaction and to which one. I know someone had similar reaction to buttercups her horse had eaten but seems too much of coincidence for u to have changed feed lately. If in doubt though call vet. But with my lad it went away on its own eventually after taking him off feed does take time though

A couple of years ago my mare got a lumpy rash suddenly and after having the vet out it turned out it was down to a skin infection (can't remember what exactly now).

So may be best to get the vet out.

Loads of horses at my yard are covered in lumps and rashes at the moment (including mine). Think the flies are out now it is warming up and I think mine is allergic to buttercups. If she seems itchy and sore it might be worth getting the vet out for medicated shampoo but otherwise you could try piriton and cold hosing?

Thank you all so much for your replies. I was too worried so got the vet this morning.

Turns out its just an allergic reaction that she has scratched and made sore.... Vt recommended some horse antihistamines but they are £280 ! Would human ones work if the dose was increased ? I'm not wanting to do anything wrong by her but its such a lot just for what is essentially piriton.

Interestingly the vet told me NOT to wash it, I'd been using hibiscrub but he said leave well alone, just keep her fly rug on to try and minimise the rubbing or fly irritation. The bumps on her legs are just fluid / hives and nothing to be worried about the vet said. So although she looks a mess, poor thing, she actually isn't as bad as I thought ! Thank goodness.

Can someone tell me how to put pictures on here please

Thanks again for your replies

Yes my friends a vet and said its safe to use piriton Off the record obv.

do not use it 'off the record', what happens if your horse becomes really ill with this and then the vet is called in an emergency and no-one can contact you, the vet then uses a drug that reacts with the piriton and makes your horse worse?

just call your vet surgery and ask what does you should be giving piriton at and ask them to put on the horses notes that you are giving it. it is not illegal and it is poor of the vet not to of told you that piriton is widely used with great successwhen horses have an allergic reaction.

i work at a vets and sometimes people medicating their own animals without guidance causes the biggest problems

Ok thank you, not sure why my own vet hasn't mentioned piriton...
I was going to tell my vet what I was using anyway, don't want them to think I hadn't bothered with any treatment and was just leaving her and as you say they need a record of what she's been treated with, "just in case"

Think the "off the record" comment was just because it came from a third party and obviously without seeing my horse the vet in question would not say its ok to use it, they are merely saying that they know it has worked on others.

I am grateful for any advice, on or off the record tbh, I would always follow it up with my own vet but sometimes others have new ideas.

Thanks everyone for your help x

My pony had a bad case of hives last year reacting to a newly washed rug. He had to have a steroid jab which didn't work so ended up of steroid tablets for a few weeks, 80 a day to start with!! My vet said in order for piriton to work he could need 50 at a time and would work out ridiculously expensive. The steroids did work but he has ended up with white patches of hair all over his body and cost over £200! Hope yours recovers soon.

I put "off the record" as it was a qualified veterinary friend of mine who had told me during a private conversation in a non proffesional capacity. She has obv. NOT seen the horse in question and the last thing i would want to happen is the he said/she said dilemma. I would expect the op to go and further this with her own questions to the relevent parties required.

That's what I said to, I really appreciate your help so thank you. Incidentally it worked ! See post below, so tell your friend thank you too !

:):). I am delighted to report that the lumps & rash have completely gone following 3 days treatment with piriton (human variety). Total cost £6.00 !

There isn't a bump insight this morning. Can't tell you how relieved I am. I gave jazz 6 x piriton morning & night the first day, then 3 tablets morning & night the next so days. No other treatment at all, I left her neck alone as advised and whilst its still a bit crusty it's also healing nicely.

Thank you all for your help & advice, I hope this thread might help someone else too.

:):)

Well, one summer my late pony was lying out on the grass and flowers and ended up having an allergic reaction to something in the grass beneath her. I gave her a few tablets of Piriton in her feed twice and day and that cleared it up. The symptoms of the allergic reaction was identical to yours. It will be a summer related reaction to something :) (Sorrry, didn't read last bit! Weird that you did exactly as I suggested before I suggested it , are we long lost twins? haha)
