Lask week my mare had a large crack appear from nowhere in her right fore hoof. She has been totally sound and in work all week but obv needed the farrier. Farrier came today and reshod her and said the foot didnt look too bad but nailing the shoes on will be a close call.

He got the shoes all done and said it was close as he only had a few millimeters to spare at most and said he would be happy when she was finished and he saw her walk. So he finished and i walked her and she was fine so i cheered and leapt for joy as she is entered into her 2nd HT on sunday which i have been working so hard towards.

Tonight i turned her at the gate and i noticed out the corner of my eye she wasnt right. She is ok in walk and is sound on a small circle in the school but is very lame turning a circle right on it ( all fine turning left ) and whilst ok in walk she is lame lame in trot.

Im guessing its a bit of nail bind on the foot that had the piece break off given she is very sore turning yet fine on a surface. I have called and left the farrier a message letting him know and asking what we can do and asking if he can come out and sort her and poss glue a show on so she is ok for sunday.

Anyone had any experiences with something like this just before a comp?. Obv if she cant go she cant go but im hoping and praying that he can either take it off and glue it on ( dont know how well glued shoes work as she needs stud holes for HT's ) or just move the nails.

If your farrier comes back and says there's nothing you can do really it's just a bit sore (does she ever get 'footy' just after being shod?), and that riding her won't cause any harm.. would a bit of bute be an option? Good luck!

Shes is never footy after being shod and hes always cuts her toes back well as she does forge as she is a very big moving warmblood so the only thing that was different this time was the nails as he said it would be a close call.

I do have some danilon but should i give her this and run her? Im only doing a short small ft9 class and a 2ft3 class. The groud is hard but this place has very good grass coverage and sand down on take offs and landings.

I will try ringing him again forst thing tomo and if i cant get him i will have to beg my old farrier do see if he can come and see her ( we fell out but has has told a friend he would do her again if i asked and i WILL beg if i have too).

Can a standard shoes be glued on of does it have to be a special shoe?

I'm really not in the position to advise re the bute/danilon, was just wondering about other possibilities to consider! Would speak to your farrier if I were you. :) I *think* 'glue ons' as it were are actually a whole type of shoe with special plasticy 'tabs' on.. so you wouldn't be able to glue on her standard shoes I don't think.

Must be very frustrating for you and I hope you can sort it. :)

i'd leave the shoe on and tub it, at least a few times. very very hot salty water, just an inch or so in a rubber bucket. it can work absolute miracles.
if she's not absolutely 100% by tomorrow after tubbing i would ditch the HT idea though, because even if she seems okay in trot and canter she might be favouring it and more likely to damage the other leg as she's not working totally 'true', kind of thing.

I wonder what was meant by tubbing it lol. So stand her in hot salty water to cover the foot and soak it? How long for?

I wont run her if shes not right just hoping he can come back and sort her out but even then if shes not sound i wont run her ( ill just cry and go and support my friend ).

I leave mine standing in the bucket as long as he will stay there, use enough water to cover the nail holes :)

If you can get her to stay in the 'hot foot tub' for 15 mins,it might help.
Glue ons are special shoes and not all farriers do them.
Sometimes, after a tricky shoeing job, which perhaps requires longer with a foot in the air, often at a funny angle, because if there is limited room to nail the farrier has to be damned sure he's aiming right, horses can be sore higher up,knee, stifle, thigh.
Either way a few days rest should put it right. Be prepared to be a specator on Sunday, sorry:(

yep, 20 mins if he'll stand it, keep changing water though, you want it clean and you want it HOT, pouring more boiling water in won't work because it'll get high enough to touch his heels and then he'll say 'ouch' and want to take his foot out, it needs to be really shallow, so it doesn't touch any sensitive bits. with lots of salt dissolved in it.
you really do need a rubber bucket or tubtrug, normal plastic buckets are usually too brittle to have shod hooves in.

an ex- of mine was a farrier and told me that his mate pricked a horse in his exam, made it bleed. they tubbed it frantically and it was absolutely fine, and he passed...

Thanks for your help i would have done this tonight if id have known but in my years of owning horses this has never ever happened to me ( even my TB had great feet! ).

I have a small tub trug as her breakfast bowl so will wash that and put really hot water in it and make it really salty and do that severel times tomorrow and just see how she looks.

Have also text the farrier and will call him in the morning again. If she is still like this tomorrow ill be cheering ym friend on sunday - im totally gutted. I could actually cry but thats horses i guess.
