My mare strained her upper suspensory v mildly at the end of last year, the vets came out and I just paid the bill rather than going through the insurance and it was much much less than my excess.

Now im realising I should have told my insurance company so do you think I need to call them and say about it or not?

The sprain was never concretely confirmed as she wasn't scanned as she came right with box rest and a slow introduction to work. Will this lead to an exclusion on my insurance next year. The horse is 4 and the vets said this is a relatively common injury in horses of this age that then presents no further problems.

I'm having a minor panic now!!

In theory, yes, you should tell them. Don't count on it not leading to exclusions, though. Henry had a one-off mild laminitis attack 4 years ago. One vet visit, no lasting damage. They slapped an exclusion on laminitis, metabolic syndrome and cushings. This year I was going to switch companies (due to him being 20) and the new company still wanted the exclusions, despite no illnesses since that attack in 2008. I've told them where to shove it and am going with BHS Gold membership instead (plus money saved for vet fees).

i had a horse that went lame, vet came out said it was absess (my bum it was!) horse just went sound again one day without treatment just box rest. hopping one day, sound the next. no sign of absess anywhere. Been sound in full competition work for 4 years now, but insurance has written off whole leg!!! for a sodding "absess". Do wonder why we have insurance sometimes..........

If you ever need to claim the insurance will ask for a history and then they will find out.

If she goes lame during the policy when 1st incidence happened then you should still be able to claim - if you tell them. However when it comes to renewal they will apply an exclusion to that leg.

Thanks! Will call them this week and let them know, right pain in the bum though especially as vet has said she will not suffer ANY future problems due to this as once it's healed it's fine!

Hi, Don't know who you are insured with but I have just been talking to underwriter at Petplan this evening and they put a 12 month exclusion on this type of injury. So long as your vet is happy to give you a report saying that there has been no problem in that leg - or whatever - in 12 months since injury, then Petplan take the exclusion off.
Only exception is when there has been a previous fracture, this always means a permanent exclusion. Hope that's some help.
