Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for some advice with regards to Regumate.

I currently own 2 mares. 1 is a 16hh Tb who is a sweetheart and the other is a Devil 13.2 New Forest Type Pony.

My Devil Pony is just that ... a Devil

My vet came out last Friday as I'd been having trouble with her striking out and squealing when I approach her.
She has had a bad start in life (she's now 9 and I have owned her for 8 months), and was told by the dealer that she had 'attitude on the ground'. With this in mind I still bought her because once you 'do' manage to catch her she's a fantastic ride!!!
She can;t ever be stabled due to her issues which is fine as I allow her to live out 24/7.

Over the past 4 months she's gotten worse and is bordering on dangerous!!! I just can't get near her.

The vet has prescribed Regumate and the farm where she's kept have agreed that I can keep her sectioned off in the mares field in the hope that I can at least put a bucket of feed in with her to give her medication.

I'm at my wits end

Will Regumate really help? Can it help her behaviour?
It's soooooo bloomin' expensive but I just want to help my pony.

PLEASE HELP xxx

My filly (aged 3) has started to become very stressy, calling for her mate (also female), neighing constantly, not concentrating, weaving. You name it. Even lifting a back leg when being groomed around that area. I contacted NAF feeds about Oestress their hormanal mare treatment. Havent got round to getting any yet. But as it is herbal it won't do my horse any harm if her issue isn't with her season. But we have monitored it over the last month or so and it does seem to coincide with her season. She is a dope on a rope when not in season and just goes in her stable and nods off. Out 24/7 too. Might be better to go down the cheaper options first . Have you had her scanned to see if there are any issues with her ovaries or such like. Someone suggested that to me and if the Oestress doesn't work for me and horse the next call will be the vet and see what they suggest.

Thankyou for your reply Mandy

I should have said that I have already gone down the Oestress route but to no avail. My mare is such a little witch at the moment that she couldn't even be properly examined by the vet as we couldn't catch her

My vet observed her in the field and from her observations she prescribed Regumate.

I have a tub of Oestress at the yard which has only had a small amount used if you'd like it? We were onto our 2nd tub when I realised it wasn't helping my girl.

Hope you get good results with it though. I think my girl just likes me to spend money LOL xx

Thankyou Maizy

Feeling much more optimistic now.

Anyone else with any views most welcome before I splash the cash ..... this prescription is burning a hole in my hand LOL x

hi before you start regumate which is great by the way i would have her scanned for polycistic ovaries or other complications if all clear go down the regumate route or maybe the marble route but make sure there is no underlieing cause ,i know from experiance good luck

Regumate will only help if her bad behaviour co-incides with her coming in/being in season - because ALL it does is stop a mare coming into season.

If her behaviour is bad all the time (and getting worse) then - particularly if her behaviour is aggressive - I would suspect a Granulosa Theca Cell tumour on the ovary. These tumours secrete testosterone and can make a mare think she's an ill-disciplined stallion! The treatment is removal of the affected ovary.

If her ill behaviour comes at roughly three week intervals, try the Regumate. If it's constant, you'll be wasting your money and you need to get her sedated and scanned by a good equine repro vet and a blood test done for hormone levels.

A good friend of mine has a mare which is permenantly on regumate. She firstly tried all the usual off the shelf supplements and none of them worked. The mare is not quite a devil if she is not fed it but does become difficult to handle and this is all the time not just when she is in season.

She has tried to take her off it since I have known her and she went straight back to being badly behaved. I know she swears by it. I know that she buys it through the vets but I believe that it is also marketed for pigs and is exactly the same stuff as the horse one but cheaper and it is this that she uses. You would have to ask your vet about this though, or PM me and I will speak to my friend and get some more details for you.

In my opinion it would seem that it is worth a try. I think if it is going to work it does so quite quickly so you could try it for a short time and see.

Our pony became bolshy whilst in season and refused to jump, although not as badly affected as your pony. Trainer suggested Regumate. When I spoke to my vet he suggested marbles , they insert 2/3 marbles in uterus to simulate pregnancy. This is done with sedation and using a scan. Our pony showed improvement almost immediately and we had a great seasons competition, as this treatment is relatively new vet advised taking them out after 9 months to give her uterus a rest, however she soon went back to her old ways so he put them back in. The effect was too good to be true and almost immediate. We had them removed when she retired from competition. They do not recommend this if you intend to breed from the horse as they do not know whether the uterus is affected by having the marbles in it, but it worked for us and i felt better about it then filling her full of drugs apart from the expense, definately worth considering. We had tried loads of supplements previously but they had no effect.
