My four year old has a really, really thin mane. I tried to pull it and that just resulted in him looking bald!

Do you think I should trim it with scissors? I need to get the pulled look and something I can plait, but without reducing the already very sparse hairs?

Anyone got any top tips they could give me please?

PS. He's a picture of health otherwise, shiny coat etc. So it's not a health issue.

Thumper's mane has got quite thin over the winter (rug hoods!).

Gotta say, I cut it with scissors last weekend, as pulling it was going to result in no mane at all.

It looks ok actually....

I would nip the ends off with my fingers or use a thinning comb or knife. If you use scissors point them upwards so you dont get a straight across cut effect.

Carefully shorten it with a tail rake - I have done this on the end of the mane where it is thin and it looked not that different to the the thick pulled middle. Do a little at a time checking to see how it looks.

my boss does all the riding school ponies manes with scissors, they dont look too bad but its best to try and not do a straight cut right across the bottom! scissors up the way like magicmillbrook said!

As others have said lots of little snips upwards with scissors, not along. I also use small electric trimmers but no one else seems to!!
