Hi all,

Have a little teeny tiny shetland on loan as a companion for my horse, when he arrived he was on the 'portly' side shall we say so I invested in a grazing muzzle.

Question is - should he have it on all the time whilst out at grass for the whole summer or should I be alternating it? I am just worrying that if it is on constantly he will gorge at the grass if he gets the chance without it on and if it is on all summer will this bring any difficulties when it is taken off going into winter - or of course if he loses the weight?

Hope this isn't an extremely stupid question, I've never needed to use one before so just not so sure.

Muzzles are only supposed to be kept on for up to about 12 hours at a time. My pony is out with the muzzle at night and stabled in the day at the moment and it is making a huge difference with the weight problem. Hopefully, when the spring grass has gone, he will be able to go out during the day with a muzzle and stay out at night without one.

That's a great help thanks, he is out all day with it on adn in at night because I wanted him to have a rest from it - I feel he has lost some weight already which I am pleased about.

If he loses enough then letting him stay out 24/7 split with it being on and off sounds like a plan - thank you!!

My pony wears his all the time as he is out 24/7. I take it off daily to check for rubs etc but he is fine
