Hi, I am new to forums and indeed to showing. My coloured horse (he is a 14.3 skewbald, lemon) and I qualified for the 15+ coloured horse in-hand class at Equifest. I would like advice please - should he be plaited for this class or should I leave his mane and tail "natural" - he is not full feathered so legs trimmed. The competion is mid August so all answers greatly fully received as soon as possible.:o:confused:

You match turnout to horse type.

What ridden type does your horse fit? Lemon does bring the argument that palominos are not plaited but plaited or hogged are more likely to suit.

Thanks, not sure what ridden type he is - he is not fine but not quite full cob - he is 20 years old, sorry, as I say I am new to this - if I could show you a pic it may be easier. All advice gratefully received

Thanks, his owner wants him un-plaited but will see if I can work on her. He changes colour during the year - the pic is from June when he is at his darkest - his brown bits are now very pale - on his passport he is skewbald but classed as a lemon - mum was a cremola

I think he's a buckskin not a palomino.
If he didn't have a cremello dam I would have considered flaxen chestnut + rabicano.

He is a skewbald but isn't lemon.

If you are showing in hand - I would recommend - changing the long boots for beige trousers and short boots. It looks like "you've just fallen off".

I would definitely plait especially as his tail is plaited.

Good luck.

Def plait - also get yourself an in hand bridle or certainly not that bit - looks like a european gag - not in hand showing!!

Also, dark trousers, shirt, tie and waistcoat - hair tied up in neat bun or neatly tucked under a a flat cap. Also, teach your horse to stand up properly - check out the other in hand classes before yours at Equifest for tips!!

I'd be inclined to hog and turn out as a show cob personally, going by that pic. But otherwise, yes, he should be plaited if not, :)

Thanks for all your posts - we do now have an in-hand bridle and snaffle bit - the pic taken was after the class so didn't have him standing properly - do that in the class. We are going to plait, hope we get on ok - its a big competition for us newbys. Also have jod boots, brown trousers, shirt, tie and will use the jacket - also brown hat silk so all to match. Next year going for double bridle and do ridden classes to - can't ride without a martingale as is very strong when ridden, despite being 20 he thinks he is still a youngster, just loves being ridden and showing off to everyone. :)

Send a pic of your horse too - what classes are you doing? We only joined 15+ horse and pony this year - am getting bit nervous about it, its such a big competition but, we qualified so we gonna go, probably wont get anything but don't mind - go older horses
:D
