My little pony developed a series of sarcoids on and around his sheath. Have used paste to burn some of them off with reasonable affect but it got too much for him, too painful in such a deilcate area. But one, right infront of his sheath, has grown to the size of a small golf ball and is weaping slightly. My biggest problem is the vet can't get anywhere near him, and i mean anywhere near him, not even to sedate him so what do i do!?!?!?

Could you manage to give him sedalin or something so the vet can get close enough to sedate him? You're going to have to do something for him. Does you vet not have any suggestions? They must have met this before at some point. Perhaps in extremis a wildlife vet with a dart gun?

Were you not given bute or something while the cream was on the sarcoids? Not only does the cream burn like mad, as the sarcoids die they release toxin which hurts too. You might have to consider radiation therapy for him. How old is he?

I'm having a similar problem with my mare. Last time vet called out she wouldn't let her get the needle in to sedate. She's had too many visits and needles and has thrown the towel in. The vet has left me with a tube of Sedalin and has asked me to give this to her half an hour before she calls out again. Can't tell you whether it will work or not but suggest it's worth a try with your boy too.

There are a few specialists who currently recomend using laser to remove them as this does not disturb the tissue surrounding hence preventing further spread. A chap called Jeremy Kemp-symmonds (I think!) operates in Newmarket and has had a lot of success with these things.

My boy had sarcoids on his sheath last year and he is not the most tolerant of animals and one was right on his belly near his belly button, but with the aid of a twitch we got the Liverpool cream on and so far, touch wood everything is OK.

yes you can remove them under a general anasthetic (spelling? its late) with a laser, if you have a spare 3 to 4 thousand!!!! (yes i have had a horse lasered by D Knottenbelt at liverpool) yes it worked well but did have to get cream on it as well whilst healing. sarcoid cells are very resiliant!
Welshies .. have you tried twitching him before he sees the vet then get vet to sedate? vet phobia is a nightmare! the golf ball sarcoid obviously needs attention. there will be a way twitch, gum gypsey twitch, sedalin to make your pony accept the vet and treatment. remember it is in the ponys best interest. good luck

I'd probably suggest sedalin 60-90mins before vet arrives. then could twitch and or we can give one of the sedatives (domosedan) intramuscularly (at a higher dose than in the vein) which is a bit easier to do when you are fighting a naughty/scared animal than getting it in the vein. certainly you should have been provided with bute to give while he was being treated as they can be quite painful.

Thanks for all the replies, i will have to call the vet and see if he can suggest anything else and ask about sedalin. Obviously i am desperate to do something about it, but it actually doesn't seem to bother him, and he does let me do things around it, just a vet thing.
