Hi Guys
I hope this is the right place to post.
Was wondering if anyone has had any experience with misconduct on a livery yard?
I don’t have a contract with the yard but it is a publicly know livery yard – not BHS approved. I pay a lot for DIY livery and like many yards, if you go on holiday etc they will look after the horse for extra. I had ask the yard to do my horse Saturday all day and to turn out Sunday and that I would be back Sunday night. (which I still have the text saying).
Anyway got back to the yard last night and I couldn’t believe what I saw. Rugs were actually mixed into the bed and soaking wet (you can imagine what it was covered in). The water bucket was dry as a bone (only ever drinks half a big flex tub a night) and there was not a scarp of hay left. The stable has clearly not been mucked out and then I got the horse in and he was seriously dehydrated (lucky enough had spare vet supplies to treat myself).
But absolutely sickened!
Wonder if there’s anyone I can report the yard to?
– The horse was in a study so have video evidence of all of this... and its very sick!
Anyone with information on what to do or previous experience would appreciate it

Thanks and sorry its soo long just wanted to get all the info in there
- yes am moving asap

I had a phone call last night of lies saying that she (yard owner and manager) thought she was doing him all day sunday (thinking that i woundnt be up)! she hadnt fed him that morning because - what she said is that i hadnt left enough feeds - which i had for the time i had told her i was away for. so instead of her calling me to say she just didnt feed him etc. She also said that he had managed to make the mess of his rugs within 20 mins of her changing them. When the film shows he was just left in his turn out rugs and lying on his rugs that night!

Was going to but she knows she was on film as they guy doing the study told her so she did know but maybe ill make her a copy :). But is there anyone who i could report it too?

You could try a welfare organisation as she left your horse without food or water. BHS would probably be the best first port of call.

You could also try your local trading standards as she is offering a paid for service and intentionally failing to provide the service as agreed.

That is appalling - they clearly are not suitable to care for horses. I would complain, and then move your horse to a place that takes the time to look after the horses properly.

However, after one day your horse was seriously dehydrated and you had to treat him with vet supplies?

Thank you. It seems crazy that it is even possible to pay for something and then for it not to be delivered and the horse be neglected - thank god it was only 2 day !

Yup moving ASAP! but seems mad that there is no legal come back even when you have video evidence :(

If you have video evidence of animal cruelty (depriving an animal of food and water) then there will be comeback via one of the wlefare organisations.

There is also legal comeback for the failure to provide the agreed service, but as the "comeback" would only be something like refund of the money paid for the service not delivered and perhaps ability to terminate the contract early it isn't really much of a "stick" to beat them with.

There is also legal comeback for the failure to provide the agreed service said:
Was just looking legal come back and to make sure it doesnt happen again to any of her other clients :) but a stick is a nice idea

Well in that case if you really do have video that shows your YO deliberately leaving your horse without food or water I suggest that you talk to one of the welfare organisation. They may not have enough to take any action, but hopefully having them pay her a visit will give her a bit of a shake up.

The bit that surprises me is that you don't have a written contract. Sounds a bit like a yard near here where the YO (alledgedly) has a drink problem!

that does sound very bad. Wasn't there even water in the field? do you have troughs or do you top up your own?

Hope you've given them a wake up call ! Makes me so glad I'm on such a fab yard - it's scary what's out there!

It happened to be over the cold spell and water in the field is done by hose so what was there (little) was frozen plus nothing much to eat in field. I have now moved and the yard has a written contract which is all good! I know I was only at the yard for 3 months and everything kept changing i suppose yard thinks its easier not to then they can mess people around. but good for me as could just leave without looking back :).
Am i right in thinking there is a place on here where you can put bad yards on ? i just wouldn't want anyone else to have such an experience, the yard is beautiful - which obviously draws you in and think wow thats great! but once your there your kinda stuck as my gg wouldn't fit in the boot :P

This is just why i (as a born worrier) - have other liveries check for me if i cant go up .
Ive been ill this week and fab liveries offered to help out and did - i rang other liveries to check he was out and fed etc
Its not to do with distrusting people but things happen - people forget, have accidents or unintended emergencies - i always tell as many people as poss if im away or cant get up for any reason and ask them all to keep an eye out on my boy - a back up isnt a bad idea
I also ring them lol - today he was let out by someone and i rang them to ask if he had behaved for them - sounds a bit nasty and distrusting but i think most horse lovers understand, i just need to know hes ok!
When i help people i always send a quick text to say "A" is out munching happily - or in his bed all tucked up - I think we all worry and a little text just helps so much x
