I have a 16.3hh, Warmblood. He gets a very thick coat in winter so i HAVE to clip him to be able to ride him although through winter i can only ride at weekends due to my job being 9-5.30 each week day so i usually only put a blanket or neck and belly sort of clip on him.

My question is...he still has ALOT of coat to come out and someone mentioned to me about clipping him now? I took him in the school for half an hour last night (which was hard work i might add) and he was so sweaty after. His summer coat is obviously thinner once it comes in but not as thin as most and i do have a problem with him working well in hotter conditions. Last year i tried him on Pro Plus and all sorts to try and get more ooommph out of him as he was became such hard work. He has many mineral supplements/licks and i also give him electrolytes so i know hes not losing anything after the sweatng up. I have had him 9 years this year and hadnt thought of clipping him out for the summer. I do have to mention that he is out 24 7 the majority of the time in Summer aswell although does come in most days for a rest and a feed. So is clipping him out a good idea? I would really like to do all i can to make working more pleaseurable! Want to get him as fit as possible for the summer season.

ps. i do have pics of him in summer coat last year on my profile.

Any thoughts would be great...

Thanks guys!

I have a warmblood X TB and I have clipped him in previous summers because he gets so hot. I'm surprised that your horse's coat hasn't come out by now as you're in the South East and its been warm for quite a while?

Presumably, you've tried vigorous grooming? Have you tried using a shedding blade, they're really helpful. I am still pulling handfuls of hair out of my horse's legs but most has come off his back (blanket clip last winter) and his coat is pretty much there now. Hosing him off after exercise will also help get the old coat out.

If in doubt, clip him.

There are far too many myths about when and if you should clip. It doesnt matter what time of year....you can clip. If he is getting hot and he needs his hair off.....get those clippers out!

I always clip my boy in the summer, his coat is never that thin and he is a hot horse, sweats at the thought of work, so in a bout two weeks i'll be clipping it all off him.

Yeh i have tried all the hardcore grooming methods, he is always sponged down or hosed down if he gets sweaty after being ridden (which is all the time right now). Hes always been a horse to have a thick coat. I have jsut never considered the option of clipping him in summer due to some myths etc but i actually think it will be a good option for him although i am worried that he is out 24 7 the majority of the time he will be much more sensitive of the sun etc. I have got him a fly rug but may have to purchase a better quality one do u think?

Thank u so much for all your comments :) keep them coming!

I'm clipping my boy out tomorrow, I usually do my last clip end of March. early April. I show him in the summer, and I've never had a bad comment about his coat.
