Just been to see my mare, she has swollen cheeks, fast respiration, cough and looks droopy. Not on last legs though, as still eating hay. Called vets but its only the vet I dont get on with on duty. Temperature said 37.2 but going to take it again in case I didnt take it properly. Any ideas what it could be and whether its an emergency or wait and see?? Thanks..

There are quite a few things that could be but some of them are quite serious. Its going to cost you the same amount in emergency call out fees today or tomorrow. I'd call them now if I were you.

Erm...If it was my little man then i would get the vet...There is a vet i don't like..he's a smug, arrogant, idiot but i still trust his diagnosis as a vet and from the symptoms you have described i wouldn't wait until the morning.
However, maybe give him an hour and see if there is any change?

Vet now. Wouldn't even hesitate!

Thanks, I had texted my 'pet' vet hoping for an answer but no reply, so I have asked for the duty one to call me.

Depends on why you don't like that vet. I would definitely get the vet tonight but if it was one that I thought was incompetent I might be tempted to do an emergency registration with another practice in the area if I felt that strongly about it.

PS She has had a swollen face quite a few times before with no illness, which is why that bit didnt panic me, but the rest is obviously worrying..

yes, wise decision to get vet, i would if it were one of mine.

Let us know the outcome, hope it's not too serious!

Damn I now have a laminitic with COPD! She had an infection despite the OK temperature (which I checked again and was 37.4) so vet said it was lucky it had been caught in time. She has had an a/b jab and I am off to collect a/b powder and ventupulmin now. Vet said keep her outside but work her harder to keep the weight off. Thanks again.

Id be asking for a scope to confirm copd. my mare had a virus that lasted over 8 weeks, cough, snots, glands up slight temp bad breathing.. she had injectable abs for 5 days, 10 days of powders, an ventapulmin injection then a tub of the stuff, then a tub of (cant remember the name) more powder to help clear the stuff on her chest..

copd would of been an easy guess had she not of had the snots.

By the time the vet arrived, my mare did have a wad of snot appear. Vet said the colour looked like she had an infection though it looked barely off white to me..anyway that is very interesting jhoward, I will monitor carefully and request further investigations if things dont improve in the next few days.
