Hi all,

Thinking about venturing into the big bad world of showing and was going to try the Working Hunter class and Riding Horse class at a local agricultural show - what are involved in these classes? I don't fancy the one where you stand about for hours on end and take tack off etc - is that in either of these or is that the Ridden Hunter class?

Thanks in advance, sorry for lack of knoweldge - my horse is 15.2hh ISH, hunted in Ireland now general all rounder.

:)

working hunter you jump course of rustc fences then if clear called in to the ridden part where you walk trot and canter booth reins as a group the called into place. then you get of and judge rides horse. followed by saddle of and trotted up. the ridden hunter is same format as ridden part of workers.

riding horse you walk trot and canter as group and then called in in prelimary placing and you do individual show

hope this helps mrs

Cheers all, so the working hunter involves hanging about for days? Tikino - it's Kilmalcolm show - what do you reckon will it be mobbed?

Working Hunter classes rarely involve the judge riding the horse. If run under BSPS rules, the judge is not allowed to touch the horse, not even to run a hand down the leg. Neither is tack removed in these competitions. If the show is running to its own rules then of course anything could happen. The only way to be sure is to check with the Show Secretary.
In ridden hunter classes, it is usual both to strip the horse and for the judge to ride. IME the Riding Horse class usually just involves an individual show.

Thanks P - I just don't want to stand for hours as its my first venture to showing classes and don't want to put myself off at a first go lol!

Classes run by (or under the rules of) SHB(GB) ie the main hunter breeding society - the judges always ride

Everyone jumps 1st, then clear rounds (sometimes the 4 faulters too, depending on numbers) go back in for the go round. All walk, trot and canter on the right rein, then change rein (in trot) and canter on the left rein.

all pulled in - usually in place order - then the horses are ridden by the judge then stripped and trotted up in hand. Bigger shows will have a separate ride judge and conformation judge.

All tack back on and horses back out, for final pull in in order.

Marks given for jumping (style and performance), ride and comformation. Highest score wins. Simples

Riding horse class - no jumping, simple go round, pull in and then give simple show rather than ride judge.
