Has anyone had a horse with an SI injury injected with local anesthetic with view to P2G? What improvement did you see with the block on the first day? Was it as effective/less effective/more effective than having them on bute?

The local anaesthetic injection lasts 4hours maximum and is for diagnostic purposes only. It works in about 20-30mins and the most common improvements that indicate a positive result are loss of lameness, horse able to canter properly on a circle and improved transitions. It is a lot better than bute and is specific where as bute relieves pain anywhere on the body. Bute is a treatment, local anaesthetic is DIAGNOSTIC ONLY. I don't know what you mean by P2G?? If the local has a positive result the injection can be repeated with steroid for treatment which is a stronger and more specific treatment than bute. It's effects are usually seen immediately and last several months. Treatment should be combined with physiotherapy and a controlled exercise program for best results. If I have done a SI injection I would give the horse bute for 24hrs at least and sometimes longer whilst the physio is started.

I was told by my vet that it lasts up to several days as there is a very low blood supply to that area. P2G is the injection that my horse was going to have on monday if a positive result shown to the anaesthetic blocks last night. I believe it does include steriods but is a more specific treatment for the area and is a concoction of several different medications to give the best result.
