Hi,
I went to get my pony in today, and he seemed very, VERY lethargic. He is usually crazy-hyper, but I put it down to it being a hot day. When I got him to the yard, his breathing seemed very disjointed, and not rhythmical. He was also REALLY hot, so I bathed and hosed him down. He stood still, instead of making his usual fuss, and so I gave him a carrot to say well done...and he couldn't chew it. He gobbled it in fast enough, but couldn't seem to put any pressure on his back teeth. He also dribbled a lot of saliva and grass out... At this point, George pointed out how swollen he was under his chin. We put him in his stable and went to ask YO.

When we came back (she was out at a show), he hadn't moved and had his head down by his knees. He seemed completely uninterested in anything, even his beloved food. We rang the vet, described symptoms etc. and he said wait to see what he is like in the morning. We then waited at the yard for the next two hours, (til 9.30) and Pony barely moved at all, except to have a pee.

I'm quite worried, as he looks so out of sorts, and not being able to eat seems like it could be a big problemo...

I'll check him again in the morning, and ring vet as necessary, but in the meantime, does anyone know anything at all that this could be/ what could have caused it?

Chocolate-dipped marshmallows to everyone who actually read all this,:D even if you think I'm MAJORLY over-reacting..non-horsey Father certainly does.

Oh no what's choke? He was coughing a bit, if that helps? I was in panci mode, but the vet said to see how he was in the morning... :S

a horse hanging its neck like you describe is not a happy horse. If he was mine I would be checking him through the night and probably fallen out with vet. For suggesting I sit on it till morning. Sorry just my opinion.

Sounds like choke. As in he's choking on something. Hence the odd breathing and saliva coming out. It can pass by itself but usually will quite quickly - 1/2 hour.

Don't wish to alarm you but sounds like the vet should have come out. My horse choked so badly he nearly didn't make it. (this is rare...) Maybe phone YO and ask them to check on ponio?

Any wheeziny/whistling noise also would indicate choke.

Choke is basically where food gets stuck in the horses throat and as they have no "upward reflex" in their eosophagus they find it difficult to dislodge and blockages. The coughing, drooling and dis- interest in food would make me think it could be this (mild form that is).

I would ask your vet to come out asap to have a look.

Fingers crossed he gets better soon :)

Get the vet out to review...pronto...you will get a bill but at least the reassurance if he is indeed ok, but owners know their horses best and if he is out of sorts then get some veterinary advice asap x

thanks guys :( I'm really not sure what to make of this, as Mother says wait till morning and then see how he is :/ its pretty definitely not strangles: no nasal discharge, etc etc and literally all underneath his chin is swollen, not just an abscess. Thanks anyway..may ring YO and ask for him to be checked on... I'm gunna be unpopular tomorrow :D

Glad to hear you don't think it's strangles. Whatever it is, hope he's alright :(

what worries me is he is showing a lot of signs of acute grass sickness.

you should of had the vet out immediately imo

andi would be up the yard now on the phone to the vet personally.

I totally agree :-( sadly I have experience of this cruel disease.

When my lad started displaying these symptoms in January, I was confused as it seemed so like our previous grass sickness case (obviously wrong time of year though) but in fact turned out to be perotinitis!!

My lad deteriorated seriously quickly & other liveries on the yard at first thought I was over reacting but they too were shocked at how fast he went downhill. Luckily he survived but he was critically ill for 10 days.

I strongly recommend getting the vet urgently, had I listened to others, I would have waited but I knew he wasn't happy & so glad I trusted my own instincts.

Keep us posted & good luck
