Does anyone have any experiences with Mares getting Smegma between their udders? My Mare seems to be suffering with it. I've never heard of or seen this before.

I can tell you a very funny story about this problem.

All my riding horses have been geldings, but I now have a cob mare. Washing her off a few months ago I noticed a lump between her teats. I had a feel and was furious to find what I considered a sarcoid. She had been vetted as free from sarcoids.

I moaned to my vet and asked her to have a look when she next called in. I was not there when she checked the mare and was rather embarrassed to be told I needed to wash the mare more thoroughly as my 'sarcoid' was a hard and very attached lump of smegma !

I have no excuse, I have owned horses for 40 years !! I softened the gunk with baby lotion and then washed in warm water.

Wow 40 years thats incredible. Thank you i will try that :) i was so worried when i first see it, am so relieved its nothing serious. I got a bit off today its the most weirdest stuff I've ever seen! It was dark in places and a orangy/yellow/brown in colour and had ripples thro it. Does this seem like Smegma to you? Sorry for the in depth description.

My cob mare walks over to people with her ears back, cuts them off and then cocks a back leg to get them to rub her teats lol. Our other mare won't even let you look under her tummy without getting defensive.

Aw bless them Katherine1975 i only have the one she's only 3 and a half years so probably hasn't had anyone near them except those pesky flies. I had a quick go today, shes not kicking out at me but she gives me a moody mare face and swishes her udders with her tail and stomps her foot up at her udders getting agitated.

Yep, my mare gets this all year round. Never seems to bother her but I like getting rid every now and then just to make myself feel better if nothing else :) Having my hands there doesn't bother her either thankfully

My younger mare has over the last year begun to relax when I clean there, the older one opens her legs and starts drooling in pleasure ! I either wash it or peel it off, it comes off quite easily.

Udder cream is good for slathering on and leaving, then wiping off after a few minutes along with all that black gunk.

I have 3 mares, all love a good clean, but one is like Katherine's, she marches over and cocks her leg, I hate to think what people think I'm doing when this occurs, she simply demands I sort it out!

Freaked me out when I first encountered it with my mare, it looked absolutely heinous, almost like she had some puss filled, rotten wound under there. A quick wipe with a moist flannel and back to normal! I make a point to do it every week minimum, especially as I usually slather her udders in sudocreme to keep the flys off, works a treat but leave residue!
