Does anyone have any experiences with Mares getting Smegma between their udders? My Mare seems to be suffering from it. I have never seen or heard of it before.

I have never called it that but yes my mare used to get black smelly gunk, I used to wash it off with a warm sponge but depends how obliging she is! Perhaps soften it with baby oil or something else first? I would do a patch test elsewhere on her body first, unless using plain water.

Yes, often happens :) Just like geldings - some do and some dont.
In my experience, its been more so in the mares which have previously had foals & have a larger udder.

Keep on top of it by wiping through with a baby wipe daily :)

Tiny Fuzzy will now actually lift her leg & invite me to wipe her clean as she does get quite a build up if I dont :rolleyes3:

Thank you both. I'm new to owning a horse, and I've never heard of it before. I had a go at cleaning her today but she really isn't liking you near that area, i got some off but i didn't want to push her to far, she's only a youngster.
I apologise for all the questions in advance how can i be sure that it is this? What does it look like when you've got some off? And when you say smelly, is it a bad smell or just a distinctive smell?

Many thanks

It will probably just be a build up of sweat, dirt and fly poo! It smells like toe gunk, a strong smell, you wouldn't market it as a perfume.
My mare wasn't keen on having her bits felt to start with, you may need to build up gradually, just get a soft warm cloth and do one gentle wipe to start with, slowly catchy monkey.
