My cob has one smelly foot. It looks like one of his frogs is split slightly and muck/gungk is getting inside (imagine a pocket in his frog). I have tried to clean it out but I cant get right in. I have tried to spray some of NAFs frog health in to disinfect it but he wont let me and TBH I don't think it is getting in.

Anyone got any ideas?

He is in his stable ATM but I have to go back and sort him out in about haf an hour so a quick response would be gratefully appreciated

Wow that was quick. Thanks. TBH I was thinking about poulticing it overnight and getting the blacksmith to come tomorrow and trim his frog back.

you will think this is weird ,but a babies nappy ie pampers are very good and are easy to fit ,and will help draw out the puss !
my vet recommended them and always use them now ..put it on dry

hope hes better soon

I think I'd hot tub it with some Epsom Salts or a handful of table salt, then, if you don't have any animalintex, wrap it up in a nappy or Always/Bodyform ;) secure with some vetrap, avoiding the coronary band.

I think I might have some animalintex after all and I definately have epsom salts, vet wrap and nappies. Off I go.

Thanks for answering folks. See - this is what HHO is great for!

Tesco express will be open..

nappy or sanitary towel. clean it out with some salt water, like above with vetwrap...i think old farrier put a plastic bag, you know the forever bag type, over it and duct taped the top to stop it getting muddy/wet. good luck. x

Tesco express will be open..

If only..... My nearest tesco is 30 odd miles away. I wish it were closer.

Anyway, gave it a right good clean out last night and again this morning and put some of that frog health stuff on. It looks/smells a bit better so hopefully its done the trick. The problem is he has such deep clefts around his frogs, getting right down into them is difficult. The hoof pick doesn't reach right down.

Thanks again for the quick responses.

is it thrush? if so you need to let the air to it not wrap it up.
and hydrogen peroxide or if you have none,i have successfully treated thrush with household bleach.

Keratex hoof disinfectant is fab for thrush :) and easy to apply. First few days I scrub with hibiscrub an then apply, secede half of week just pick out and keratin daily ten drop it too every other day/twie a week :)

It is probably thrush - soak the foot in Milton sterilising fluid if you cannot get hold of Hydrogen peroxide.

Hope the worst part is over now. I routinely use Aspinal Apple Cider vinegar (or other good quality one) (£1.80 from big tescos) plus a small bottle of tea tree oil (9ml/10ml about £4.50) which I put into a plant spray bottle shake and routinely spray on my horses feet when pick them out as a natural antiseptive/barrier against any nasties. cheap too so don't mind using it all the time and my clients seem happy to do it as not paying out a fortune and can just add in monthly to the shopping trolley!

I also love the Red Horse stuff as again natural so if holes I tend to put in arti-mud or hoof stuff as a barrier.

Hope sorted though.

Soak, preferably get him to put his foot in a bucket of clean water with a few drops of hibiscrub, dry as thoroughly as possible and then pour hydrogen peroxide over the frog, it will find its way into the clefts. I agree with other posters, don't cover, air is the best way to attack thrush as it thrives in damp conditions. I recently bought a frog oil spray which also seems to work well.
