Just wondering if anyone could suggest a reason for the following-

Brought my one horse in this evening and noticed he is breathing very heavy (sort of puffing, like they'd do after exercise) but he hasn't been exercised today, neither has he been rushing around the field. He was also just standing around more than normal in his field today and is warmer than he should be. He has eaten his food this evening and was picking at some hay however doesn't seem as alert as I would normally expect him to be.

I'll be calling the vet, but was wondering if anyone could make any suggestions?

Sounds like an infection. No difference to us with a cold. Can you take his temperature ? Vet will be needed for anti b's etc. Beaware also that a horse with gut pain will puff.
