i was in the field today, watching my horses have a good gallop around, when one of them slipped and crashed in to the fence and somehow managed to get both front legs through it and was lying on her back. if she would have panicked, she would have broken both legs however she stayed down panting.
i acted quickly and put two lunge lines around her front legs and pulled them so they went bent underneither her, allowing them to free and attatched a lunge line to her far hind and pulled her free and she stood up fine.
however, as soon as she was up she was stamping her legs and one of her fronts is swollen, and she had a gash in her tendon. i then cleaned it up and called the vet who said it didnt need stitches and to keep it bandaged andp ut her on box rest.
i was wondering if theres any chance of speeding up the recovery? ive just got her to competition fitness and this isnt a set back i could use. she hates standing still, she likes to be moving. anyone have any ideas??

Thats better! In the tendon is serious!
If its not involving the actual tendon then im not sure why box rest has been suggested? Gentle movement will help blood flow and hence healing. Anyhow, i would say lots of cold hosing to help reduce inflammation. Also keep it meticulously clean. Marigold is a herb used to help heal minor wounds (you can feed it and/or apply as a cream). It is excellent for any skin problem.

thankyou - where can i get marigold from? should i turn her out in a small paddock with not enough room to go crazy but enough to graze and walk?

thanks very much! im going to order some and keep her moving gently. i just hope shes sound and still fit after!!

Good luck!

How long is she on box rest for?

Did you tell vet that she is not going to take well to box rest? Did vet say ot was OK to wlak gently in hand?

I can't give any advice as have not seen injury but would say that once fit most horses come back quite quickly and would go with the vets advice...thats what you are paying for after all.

How lucky that you were there when the accident happened/ Also you were very quick to respond, well done.
