How can I thin it out ?

*sobs* Thankies

Have you pulled it or trimmed it?
My boys is very thick in the middle, I pull it from the underneath to make it thinner, if you use a solo comb you can get the same effect (not as neat in my opinion, but then i dont mind inflicting pain on my poor pony in the name of beauty!!!)
Thinning combs are ok, but you tend to get spikey chopped bits.

Thinning combs are okay. Until the mane starts to grow back. And then what is the answer. Ours will not let you pull it whatsoever. Used the Oster rake, thinning scissors - which initially looked fab and had the effect - but now it is growing back, it sticks up, is thick at the base and is totally unplaitable and hence missing shows. We can sneak up on her when eating and pull out about 3 or 4 tugs of the short spikey mane but that is it. If we use thinning scissors again we run the risk of cutting off the already long hairs in the process and making it even thinner at the bottom but yet thick at the base. Recommendations please.

Have you tried Oil of Cloves? Have never used it personally (or know anyone who has!) but I saw it ages ago on some horsey tips program that was randomly on tv once!
You rub it in at the base of the mane and apparently it numbs it, have to wear rubber gloves or your fingers will go numb too!!! You can buy it from the chemists apparently! Sorry I cant recommend it personally! My friends horse woke up from his sedation when we tried to pull his mane, he is an evil pony just to brush his mane!! (we didnt sedate him just to pull his mane, just thought we would use the oppurtunity!!)
My ponio is naughty when he has his mane pulled, but I just keep going whatever he does and eventually I get there! He best if hes been worked really hard so hes hot and sweaty, so it comes out easier!
