i am wonering if any of you have any thoughts on my mares lameness - no heat swelling ect not lami - went for ride this morning walked qiute a way about 20 mins then trotted, bit lame, then walked about 10 mins, had another trot a bit better, walked another 10 mins now turning for home walk speeds up for 10 mins, trots fine walks again speedily then canters not lame at all - joggs trots and walks all the way home, sound. I think i is arthritis based have put her on a cortaflex no bute supplement on thursday so it hasnt kicked in yet and my freind has leant me her boi magnetic wraps today - has any one had any luck with the magnetic boots for this lameness - thanks - p.s. had vet and back lady and saddler.

Navicular? Believe lameness normally works off.

What did your vet suggest by the way? I would personally have any undiagnosed lameness investigated.

Did the vet take x-rays and what did they say? Has she been lame for a long time and is it intermittent? How old is she? (questions, questions

).

I have used mag boots on my horses for years. Cant really say whether they have had any benefit, but they certainly havnt made them worse.

no havent got as far as x rays yet - been iffy for about a month - very hard rutted ground here - she is 15 yr old welshie - only just started doing anything on her in the last week as its been far too hard to do anything other than walk - so will wait to see if she works through it now the ground is getting softer - then if not will have vet out again. i expect she will suggest x rays - the last time she came she said box rest, bute then see how it goes!!!!! No diognosis!

If you have ruled out laminitis, has farrier checked to see if it could be an abcess? They are not always evident. If it was me I would just see how it goes over the next couple of weeks as the ground softens up, but would seriously consider x-rays if she's no better soon. Nine times out of 10, ex-rays will show 'changes' so dont be overly concerned.

thanks Llwyncwn - forgot to say farrier was first to come - couldnt find anything at all - but i polticed it for 36 hours just to be on safe side - she is still nice and forward going and when i turn her out in field she trots or canters off - so im hoping that it cant be too bad or she wouldnt be wanting to do that. its such a worry isnt it? although half the horses on our yard are of a certain age and not 100% and they and the owner just get on with it - i have to say im not 100% most of the time!!!!

The way your horse has been working sounds identical to mine - his lameness was on and off to the point I thought I was going mad! As part of the treatment the vet suggested a good quality joint suppliment - I'm trying cortaflex at the moment. Its too early to tell what effect this has had on him yet. I'm also having x-rays done next week.
Hopefully the combination of joint suppliment and softer ground will work for you. I'd be really interested to know how you get on.

thanks Hullaballoo - youve hit the nail on the head - i do think im going mad - one minute she ok, next i think theres a head bob - almost as if im looking for it - head groom (who knows just about everything horsey) says shes been lame since i got her its just the hard ground has shown it up more and says ride her through it, it isnt damage just age! I too am hoping that this supplement helps. will keep you posted x

My boy would trot sound then lame then sound again when ridden but always sound in hand. I got a Mctimothy cariopactor (sp) out and she found that he had pulled the muscle under his chest and that was what was making him lame on and off as it was sometimes catching him.

thanks for your reply Irishcobs - had the bowen lady out who has treated her in the past for frozen shoulder - no joy im afraid, all was well - although she was sore under the saddle so i hoped that it could have been that - but that was 1 1/2 weeks ago and no change x
