toby wasn't his usual self today and his resps where up. anyway he was due tp go to the vets today to get his hocks x-rayed so took him anyway as would proberly have got the vet out anyway.

vet had a listen to him and his resp rate at rest was 22 when the resp rate should be between 8-10 rpm. vet decieded to take some bloods and they came back at him being anemic. to cut a long story short he is now getting his resperator tract scoped today and stommach scoped 2mrw.

his hock x-rays are on hold. anyone have any thoughts on what coulkd be wrong as my head is just spinning

I feel your pain, my horse was booked in for a lamenss workup but that day and following days i nealry lost her with some kind of chronic abdom infection.

We have only just started to re look at the lameness 7 weeks later.

It could be RAO? Recurrent airway obstruction. Basically allergy or damage caused by irritants such as dust/pollen/ammonia. Paper bedding and haylage or soaked hay is really the best method for looking after the horses respiratory system if it has to be stabled. The ammonia and dust from straw and shavings is quite considerable. Damage builds up over time.

Or it could be because hes in pain from something else.

Good luck, hope hes ok

it is not showing signs of RAO. he is also on rubber matting with papper bebdding and haylage as lost his mum through copd 9 years ago. so very careful about management it was also sudden onset and ywith him being anemic there could be a few causes they need to rule out

RAO shouldn't cause anaemia. As a first step, they are probably looking for unexplained internal bleeding, which would make him anaemic. If they don't find anything, it might just be a virus or a general unhappiness (pain?) that might have affected his immune system. How old is he hun? My ned's just been scoped to try to find the reason behind his endless "summer" cough. It's a relatively easy process - horse is given gentle sedation and led into the crush. Local anaesthetic on the edge of the nose and the camera goes down fairly easily. Hope they find the problem xxx

Could it be a gutteral pouch infection? If they scope him they will look at the gutteral pouches as my horse got unexplained nosebleeds and they tried to look in his gutteral pouches, they could only get in the one as they are sometimes very hard to access, and couldn't look in the other.

Its not pleasant to watch, but is pain free to the horse. I kept feeling as if I had something in my throat so I had to have a camera up my nose and down into my throat and it wasn't pleasant but it was soon over. Like BOF says its a simple procedure.

Try not to worry hun x
